What makes OVO Energy different?

As energy industry experts, the Papernest team know that every supplier has that certain something special that they alone bring to the market. So, what makes OVO Energy different?

In independent surveys, OVO Energy was among the highest-scoring suppliers, rated four and a half stars out of five, with 85% overall customer satisfaction. Not only do they offer 100% renewable electricity, they also have carbon-neutral gas. This comes from 15% renewable biomethane gas sourced from farm, animal and plant waste, and 85% carbon-offset gas.

They also promise to plant a tree for you for every year that you remain an OVO customer. There are also green upgrades available for the extra eco-conscious.

What’s more, OVO allows customers to earn between 3 and 5% interest when their account is in credit.

Who are OVO Energy?

OVO Energy is one of the fastest-growing energy brands in the UK. Its growth became especially substantial in January 2020 when it acquired “Big 6” supplier SSE. Although the SSE brand is still active and SSE customers are still SSE customers, the acquisition added 3 and a half million new customers to the OVO group.

OVO is a progressive energy company with a firm focus on renewables, and customer service.

OVO Energy

Who owns OVO Energy?

OVO Energy is a subsidiary of Imagination Industries Ltd. and part-owned by the Mitsubishi group.

Are OVO Energy any good?

As we can see, there’s a lot to recommend OVO Energy. At least, on paper (or a screen). OVO Energy offers very decent value for money, have a record of excellent customer service, and have a modest but eclectic range of tariffs. They are also a great choice for eco-conscious customers. Especially if you’re willing to pay the small monthly premium for the OVO Beyond upgrade.

But do the lived experiences of real customers live up to the awards and accolades? Are OVO Energy equipped to handle the unique needs of your household? The Papernest team understands that not every energy consumer has the same definition of “good”. Which is why we carefully match suppliers and tariffs to your unique needs. Let’s take a look at OVO Energy’s performance in key areas so that you can make a more informed decision.

OVO Energy tariffs & prices

At Papernest, we understand that it’s not just about finding the perfect supplier, but identifying the perfect tariff. OVO Energy have an eclectic range of tariffs that should suit the needs of most households. However, there are not so many as to bamboozle energy consumers. Curiously, OVO only offers fixed-rate tariff. Its variable-rate tariff, OVO Simpler, is not available to new customers and rates are not advertised.

All of OVO Energy’s tariffs use 100% renewable electricity. Customers can also increase their tariff’s green credentials by choosing an OVO Beyond upgrade. All tariffs also offer 3% interest rewards when your account is in credit. This increases to 4% in your second year, and 5% each year after that.

You can see details for all the energy tariffs available to new customers below.

Below you can find the cost information associated with these tariffs.

OVO Energy: what other services do they offer?

As well as providing energy, OVO Energy offers a number of other services including…

Boiler and home emergency cover

Your boiler is at the heart of your home’s heating. Investing in boiler cover can keep your boiler in peak condition, ensuring that it operates efficiently and protects you from the risk of expensive repairs later down the line.

OVO offers various levels of boiler and home cover starting from £13 per month. The cover provides access to 4,500 approved engineers all over the country and includes:

  • Parts and labour costs
  • Unlimited callouts
  • Emergency hotline

Broadband

Now that SSE is part of the OVO group, the brand also provides fast fibre broadband with unlimited downloads. Line rental starts from £23 per month for 35Mbps or £26 per month for 63 Mbps.

Do OVO Energy do business tariffs?

Yes, OVO Energy also offers renewable energy tariffs for business customers via SSE. Plans are scalable, and are available to microbusinesses, SMEs, enterprise-level companies and public sector entities.

Rates are negotiated on an individual basis depending on the size of your business, your location, how much energy you use, and when you use it.

Do OVO Energy have smart meters? What smart meters do they offer?

Yes, OVO Energy offers smart meters to new and existing customers. In fact, you will only be able to access the brand’s best value tariff with a smart meter. A smart meter communicates your usage data straight to the supplier. No need to take meter readings or pay more for inaccurate estimated bills.

OVO currently offers second-generation SMETS2 smart meters. These use a secure DCC network, and unlike their first-generation counterparts they will continue to communicate usage data to your new supplier if you switch.

At Papernest, we recommend switching every 12-18 months to ensure the best value for money. And, needless to say, we’re always on hand to bring you the best possible tariff for your needs.

How to apply for the Warm Home Discount with OVO Energy

If you’re struggling to heat your home in the winter months, you may be eligible for the Warm Home Discount.

This is a government initiative facilitated by energy suppliers. It allows vulnerable energy consumers can get a flat £140 discount on energy between the months of September and March. If you are of pension age (core group) or receive income-related benefits (broader group) you may be eligible for this discount.

Although applications for 2020/2021 are now closed, you can see if you are eligible to make an application for 2021 / 2022 by clicking here.

OVO Energy customer reviews: What do their customers say?

Energy companies invest a small fortune in marketing. So it may seem like every supplier is the best one for you. The Papernest team can help you to cut through the marketing bluster and find the right supplier and tariff for your needs. One of the most important things we look at is how the supplier’s customers feel about them.

At the time of writing, OVO Energy seems to be making a great impression with customers. They currently have a score of 4.3 out of 5 on its Trustpilot page.

This puts the supplier in the middle of the “Excellent” range.

  • 1,048 (2%) were “Poor”
  • 3,093 (7%) were “Bad”

Of course, like any supplier, OVO Energy also has some negative reviews. These focus on inaccurate and expensive estimated bills, billing issues (including double billing), difficulties accessing the app, and poor communications regarding debts.

Nonetheless, it’s important to note that 86% of reviewers rated the supplier as above average.

How green is OVO Energy?

You can add this to any plan for free for the first 3 months, after which it costs only £6 extra per month.
