What should Enstroga customers do?

Learning that your energy supplier has disappeared and is no longer able to supply energy to anyone is understandably worrying, and you will want to know exactly how to proceed, as well as what you should be avoiding.

Thankfully, instructions as of right now are very simple: don't switch suppliers, don't even change your payment plan, in fact - as we will see, the only thing you should do is calmly take a meter reading and wait. Your energy supply is being dealt with, and you will soon have a temporary replacement supplier.

What happened to Enstroga exactly?

If you're not familiar with the details of 2021's energy price crisis, here is a run-down of what happened and an explanation as to how Enstroga and other suppliers were affected.

Following the easing of restrictive Covid-19 measures across the world, the reopening of several business sectors and general activity led to a rise in energy demand at a time when the supply could not keep up. This meant an increase in prices, and in wholesale gas prices in particular. Since suppliers have to respect price caps for their customers, the situation was impossible to keep up with for smaller energy firms like Enstroga.

Will my energy supply be interrupted?

Thankfully, no, and you will continue to receive energy as usual according to your needs. This is part of the point of assigning entire customer bases to new suppliers, as Ofgem is currently doing for you: the main goal right now is to ensure all energy consumers get the electricity and gas they need.

Should I cancel my payment scheme with Enstroga?

For now, don't change anything to do with payment methods, whether you've been paying Enstroga by direct debit, direct payment, or standing order. Instead, wait for the new supplier, once they are assigned, to contact you and work out the details of the payment system you'll have with them. This is also important because you may have credit or debt with Enstroga, which you will need payment information to settle.

Should I take a meter reading?

Taking a meter reading is absolutely what you should be doing right now. In fact, it's really the only part you'll actively be playing in this situation. Anything else, from choosing a new supplier to dealing with debt and credit, is either not up to you or to be dealt with later. Having a meter reading is important to set up your new account, and to then be able to switch suppliers later on, if you wish to do so.

What if I had a smart meter?

Since Enstroga never gave its customers the option to use a smart meter, this may not concern you. However, if you do have a smart meter and are affected by any kind of change of supplier during the crisis, rest assured that whoever your new supplier is, a smart meter will always do the trick, even if it means taking manual readings from it.

What if I had debt or credit with Enstroga?

If you had any kind of debt or credit issues still standing with Enstroga when they went bust, then you may be wondering what will happen to these payments you owed or were owed. The answer is uncertain at this point, but only because we don't yet know which supplier will take over Enstroga's customers.

However, if we assume that the supplier follows in the footsteps of other previously appointed suppliers (British Gas, EDF, etc.), then we can say that it is likely that your credit will be honoured by the new supplier. In terms of debt, it is also likely that you will pay it if not to the new supplier, then through them - you will receive information about this in time, on a case by case basis.

Will my energy bills go up with my new supplier?

It's hard to answer this question before knowing who has been chosen to receive your contract and provide you with energy. However, it is good to know that you will be put on what we call a "deemed" tariff, which will most likely be a very standard tariff. This means that the rate you pay under your new supplier will probably not be the cheapest one they offer, implying that for a time, before you're able to switch to another plan or supplier, your bills may well be higher than before.

However, there is no need to worry: your supplier, once chosen, will get around to your case, inform you of the exact rates of the tariff you've been given, and then give you the opportunity to shop around for better deals. You can choose from one of their tariffs, or switch to another supplier - but remember, you have to wait until they contact you before you do so.

Who will choose my new supplier?

Since counting on customers to make their own supplier switch right now would be time consuming, risky, and chaotic, Ofgem will be choosing your new supplier for you - thus, all Enstroga clients will be appointed to the same supplier at once.

Ofgem will make this choice based on, generally speaking, a supplier's ability and will to deal with this new customer base, as well as on whether they are expected to be able to keep trading despite the crisis. New suppliers have so far been appointed by Ofgem around a few days after the original supplier goes bust. As a reminder, Enstroga went bust on the 29th of September, meaning that you can expect further information around the beginning of October.

When and how will my new supplier contact me?

You new supplier will have to process and add to its database a number of new customers, which will understandably be time consuming. This is all the more true if your appointed supplier is one of the energy firms who has already accepted to receive customers from other fallen suppliers. However, there is no need to worry, as they will inevitably get around to your case.

To make sure everything goes smoothly, you can check whether your official home address is your current one. Indeed, this address is the means through which your new supplier will contact you. If you're moving house, or have done so recently, pay extra attention to how accurate and up to date this official contact information is.

Can I switch suppliers now?

When it comes to switching suppliers of your own free will and according to your preferences, you'll have to wait: until your supplier has been chosen by Ofgem and has contacted you, you shouldn't switch suppliers on your own.

However, once the details of your temporary supplier and "deemed" tariff have been communicated to you by the supplier themselves, it will be up to you to switch to a better deal or supplier. Additionally, you won't be charged any exit fees for this, whoever your supplier turns out to be.

What if I had already started switching suppliers before Enstroga went bust?

It's possible that given the current climate in the energy markets, you had anticipated Enstroga's fall and had put out a request to switch to another supplier. Alternatively, you may have switched for other reasons, of course.

In any case, as long as your switch had been correctly asked for and processed, it will take place just as it was meant to - assuming the supplier you had chosen is still trading. If the switch doesn't go through, not to worry: you'll be transferred, along with other Enstroga customers, directly to the new supplier Ofgem ends up appointing.

Who were Enstroga?

Part of a larger European-wide energy group with services in Germany, Spain and Portugal, Enstroga was a small energy supplier in the UK, with fewer than 250,000 customers. They aimed to keep energy simple with a choice of just three tariffs and an emphasis on good customer service.

Customers liked the fact they were:

  • Part of a large, Europe-wide energy supply group
  • Had phone lines open 8am to 7pm on weekdays
  • They operated a Priority Services Register

But weren’t so keen on:

  • A lack of environmentally friendly fuel mix
  • Customer service that let them down
  • Basic online functionality

How much did Enstroga charge per kWh?

On the standard variable Energy tariff Enstroga charged 17.88p for a kWh of electricity and 4.04p for a kWh of gas. On the Evergreen Plus tariff it was 16.49p for a kWh of electricity and on the Evergreen Dual tariff they charged 15.50p for a kWh of electricity and 3.14p for a kWh of gas.

Was Enstroga cheap?

Enstroga was not the cheapest on the market, but it was also not the most expensive. The median energy price cap sat at £1,179 for a dual fuel supply. Based on a 2-3 bedroom home in London, customers paid £1,022 per year for the Evergreen Dual Plus tariff for average energy consumption levels. So prices were affordable compared to national averages.

Enstroga customer reviews

Enstroga was very popular with customers in its home country Germany. However, they seemed to have had some teething problems in the UK and their success in Germany didn’t appear to have translated very well. Trustpilot shows that only 8% of Enstroga customers felt that they were receiving good customer service. This was a very low score, even for energy companies, who often struggle to connect with customers.

Customers complained about the lack of contact from the company as well as long waiting times when trying to get in touch on the phone. There were multiple complaints about being cut off by customer service, as well as a lack of callbacks. Other complaints focused on email response time being a few days at best. So, it seems clear there was much work to be done by the Enstroga team if they were to make a bigger impact in the UK.

Online reviews of Enstroga showed that their focus on customer service was really not working for them. Overall, they scored just 1.5 out of five stars on Trustpilot. A whopping 89% rated the company as poor or bad. A number of the reviews said that customers had no choice but to contact the ombudsman to make a complaint.

However, as they were a newcomer to the UK energy market, Which? and Citizen’s Advice did not have enough data to make any firm assessment about Enstroga.

How many customers did Enstroga have?

As of the supplier's disappearance, we now have an official number stated by Ofgem, indicating Enstroga had the low number of 6000 customers in its client base.

Our opinion on Enstroga

While we appreciate that Enstroga were a new company trying to make an impact in the UK and that they were trying to keep things very simple, it seems there was still a long way to go in terms of their customer service. There were many negative reviews about this online, with customers feeling they were too difficult to contact and that complaints were not handled correctly.

They also offered very little in terms of sustainable energy. Less than 3% of their fuel mix came from renewable sources, with a huge reliance on gas and nuclear fuel. While prices were good, there were other suppliers out there who also offered great value with better service and greener fuel.

What made Enstroga different?

Enstroga aimed to make things very simple for their customers. They only offered three tariffs, one dual fuel fixed rate, one electricity-only fixed rate and a standard variable rate. The rates were cheap, which appealed to customers, but their focus on customer service seemed to fall a long way short. They scored very poorly on Trustpilot with a lot of negative reviews focusing on how difficult they were to contact.

Enstroga's fuel mix

Enstroga relied on natural gas, which made up 62.6% of its energy supply. It also used twice the amount of coal as the national average. Renewables made up a very small 2.6% of their fuel mix.

Customers who were energy-conscious might have wanted to check out other greener energy providers, like Ecotricity or Bulb Energy.

How green was Enstroga ?

Although Enstroga claimed they supplied green energy, less than 3% of their electricity came from renewable sources. This was much lower than the 29% average across other UK energy suppliers.

A massive 62.6% of Enstroga’s electricity was gas, with nuclear at 19% and coal at 11.8%. This means they were not a great choice for green energy.

Enstroga: what other services did they offer

Enstroga liked to keep things very simple. That meant they did not offer any kind of friend referral scheme, nor were they big enough to sign up to the Warm Home Discount scheme. There were no special tariffs for electric vehicles and they did not offer prepayment tariffs or Economy 7 tariffs.

However, they were signed up to the Priority Services Register, but you had to phone up to do so and could not register online.

There was also a dual fuel tariff that offered slightly cheaper gas and electricity to customers.

Did Enstroga have smart meters?

No, they did not offer smart meters, and it seems they never had the chance to do so. If you had a smart meter and wanted to switch to Enstroga, then you would have lost all smart functionality when you switched. This meant you would have to revert to submitting meter readings manually or to having your meter read on a regular basis.

Did Enstroga do business energy tariffs?

Enstroga did not offer any business tariffs.

How would you have applied for the Warm Home Discount scheme with Enstroga?

Enstroga were not part of the Warm Home Discount scheme, so if you wanted to make use of this, you would have had to get your energy from another supplier.

Contact Enstroga

They would then handle the complaint with the supplier on your behalf. This also applies to any other energy supplier, so keep this in mind even now that Enstroga has gone bust.

What now for Orbit customers?

There is not much you can do at the moment. Your transfer from Orbit to Scottish Power should happen automatically. Further than that the best thing to do is to wait until Scottish Power contact you. With them you can discuss your options.

What happened to Orbit Energy?

Orbit Energy, like many other suppliers in the UK has gone bust because of the energy crisis. Their costs skyrocketed due to the high wholesale costs for gas and electricity. Their revenues however did not keep up as they were limited by the energy cap. The losses started heaping up and drove Orbit out of business in November 2021.

Will I be cut-off from supply?

Ofgem has special regulations in place to prevent this from happening. You will automatically be transferred to Scottish Power. Both companies will make sure that your supply will be handled correctly.

Should I keep paying Orbit Energy?

You have to keep paying your bills. Orbit and British Gas will together with Ofgem make sure that your switch will be handled correctly. Until the process is finished you could keep receiving bills from Orbit which you should continue paying.

What happens if I have credit or debt at Orbit?

It depends. It could be that Scottish Power will take over all credit and debt from Orbit. This would mean that nothing would happen for you, only that you would repay the debt to Scottish Power. Or it could be that Orbit will deal with the credit/debt themselves. This depends on the supplier themselves what they choose.

Will I pay more at Scottish Power?

The chance is high that you will pay more. The current circumstances at the energy market and the Ukraine war has led suppliers to charge higher prices to offset their costs. There might be a chance that you could be in touch with Scottish Power to discuss the options.

Can I keep the same contract at Scottish Power?

Because the switch is regulated by Ofgem, you will be put on a ¨deemed¨ contract at Scottish Power. Because there are so many new customers coming in for Scottish Power, it would be very hard to individualise new plans. In a later stage, you could be in touch with Scottish Power potentially, to discuss if there are any other options available.

When will Scottish power contact me?

Normally within a few weeks. If that is not the case don´t hesitate to reach out to their customers service to make sure everything is okay.

Do I need to stay at Scottish Power?

Although you can switch. It is probably best to wait for a bit to do so. Firstly, wait until your transfer to Scottish Power has been handled correctly. Then, given the current situation in the energy market, it is difficult to find cheaper rates when you switch. Waiting to see how the war develops is probably best.

I was in the middle of switching to a different supplier. What should I do?

Your old and new supplier will handle your switch as normal. You probably won´t have to do anything.

Scottish Power tariffs in 2021: what can I choose from?

Scottish Power has single tariffs and dual fuel options. For both types, you can choose between variable and fixed rates depending on your preference. In the table below we display the average annual costs for Scottish Power plans.

Fixed tariff

When you have a fixed contract you pay the same price for your energy for the entire duration. This gives you some security and prevents your bill from rising too much.

Variable tariff

Under variable tariffs, your price actually fluctuates according to the market prices. Your security that you don´t have sudden increases in price is gone. However, in return, you gain more flexibility to switch supplier without exit costs. Scottish Power also allows you to choose standard variable tariffs. In the case your price will go up, the supplier has to let you know within 30 days.

Who were Orbit Energy?

Orbit Energy were quite a young company, founded in 2018. The company was headquartered in London, while their parent companies Energy Global Investments and Genie Energy were situated in Australia and the US.
Orbit had close relations with Shell Energy.

How green was Orbit Energy?

Orbit started offering green energy from 2019 onwards. Orbit Energy only uses Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin certified products.
All of the electricity that Orbit Energy uses is backed up by certificates of Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin, or REGOs. This shows that the energy really does come from green sources and is great news for customers who want to reduce their carbon footprint at the same time as lowering their monthly energy bills.
Their gas, however, is not from renewable sources, which lower´s their overall sustainability levels.

Orbit Energy fuel mix

Prior to going green, Orbit Energy’s fuel mix was as follows:

Fuel Orbit Energy National average
Coal 1.66% 3.90%
Natural Gas 18.95% 39.40%
Nuclear 2.16% 16.60%
Renewables 75.87% 37.90%
Other 1.37% 2.20%

Orbit Energy were greener than the average UK supplier in terms of their energy mix.

Orbit Energy reviews

In general, online reviews for Orbit Energy were positive. Of the 6,100 reviews posted on impartial, 56% thought the company was ‘Excellent’ while another 15% found it to be ‘Good’. About 18% of reviews contained a ‘Bad’ rating. This led to an overall score of 3.6 out of 5, which is quite decent.

What Pure Planet customers should do

While it might be sound scary that your energy supplier has gone bust, there is relatively little you need to be concerned about or need to do. First, Ofgem, the UK energy market's government regulator, has a safety net to ensure that no home has its energy supply cut when a supplier goes bust, instead, the customers of a defaulted supplier will be smoothly transferred to a new supplier to ensure that the flow of energy is maintained. However, it could take some time for this transition to be officially completed, so, in the meantime, we want to address any immediate concerns or questions that you might have.

Who happened to Pure Planet?

Sadly Pure Planet is the latest supplier to have ceased trading during the UK energy crisis, which has resulted in ten energy suppliers going bust since August 2021. The global gas shortage drove gas prices to an unprecedented level, but because of the energy price cap, suppliers cannot price their energy high enough to offset the high wholesale costs of energy. The end result is that many suppliers are losing money so rapidly that an unprecedented amount of suppliers have been forced to close their doors over a very short period of time.

Should I stop my direct debit, direct payment or standing order with Pure Planet?

This will depend on the state of the debt that you might owe to Pure Planet or if Pure Planet owes you any money as a result of being in credit. However, it is important to know if there are any remaining payment issues before you stop making payments it could cause issues. We say this because owing money could give you trouble later on, or alternatively, if you were owed money from Pure Planet there is a chance you could miss out on receiving it. Ofgem recommends that you continue making payments as you have normally before until you are officially completed with the transition to the new supplier that has been appointed to you.

If you have cancelled payments already then your new supplier will be able to help you set up a new payment process, so it is not a big issue.

Am I supposed to take a meter reading?

Yes, you absolutely should take a meter reading. While this isn’t an official obligation, we highly recommend that you take a reading on your energy meter and record it just in case you need a situation arises where you need to provide your new supplier with a recent meter reading. This will help your transition to your new supplier go more smoothly.

For smart meters, the same idea applies, you should take a reading and not worry about compatibility concerning your newly appointed supplier. If they have to, your new supplier will simply treat your smart meter as a traditional meter when they come over to take their own readings. Remember, you can always switch suppliers later on.

What will happen if I am in debt or credit to Pure Planet?

Most energy suppliers will honour any credit that you have had with your supplier at the time that it went bust, but not all of them. The exact timeline for when you could receive this payment is not very exact, but when you have been completely transitioned to your new supplier they should be in contact with you shortly to organize this and provide you with more information.

Regarding any debts you owe to Pure Planet, this could change depending on the new supplier that you have been appointed by Ofgem. In some cases, your debts are transferred to the new supplier and in some cases, you will need to continue paying off your debts to your previous supplier even after they cease trading. You can find out more about this once your new supplier has been announced by Ofgem and you can reach out to them to confirm the process.

Are my bills going to go up at Shell?

Generally, yes, you will be placed on what is referred to as a "deemed" contract, which will be automatically assigned to you by your new provider and could be a much higher price than your previous energy plan. However, once you are in contact with your new provider will be able to request more information about which energy plan they want to assign you and even ask them to switch you to one of their less expensive options.

What rate will I pay under my new contract?

Again, this can only be determined once you have been appointed a new provider by Ofgem. However, as mentioned above, there is a good chance it will be a higher rate than you are accustomed to paying. To avoid this we highly recommend you get into contact with your new supplier as soon as they are announced and discuss with them which energy plan you prefer to be on going forward.

On the other hand, it's important to know that you will be able to switch energy suppliers at your own whim at that time, so if you would like to you can give us a call at 0330 818 6223 and we can find you the best energy plan for your needs.

When will my new supplier contact me?

Once Ofgem announces which supplier you will be transferred to the transition process begins, however, this can be a process that takes several weeks so you will need to be patient.

How will I get in contact with my new supplier if I am moving?

Your new supplier will contact you at your current address from your previous supplier's data. What this means is that if you are moving they will reach out to your previous address with some potentially important documents, as a result, we recommend that you have all your mail from your previous address forwarded to your new address.

Can I switch suppliers right now?

While it is understanding that your first reaction to this news is to rush into finding a new supplier, that's actually the opposite of what you should do. Switching to a new supplier to quickly could cause some confusion between your old supplier, the supplier that you've been appointed by Ofgem and the new supplier that you've selected for yourself. These issues can range from anything from minor inconveniences to serious issues regarding your home's power supply

Do I have to stay with my appointed supplier?

Nope, pending any contracts that you are currently signed on for, you can leave your new supplier as soon as the transfer is complete. If you do decide to switch immediately your exit fees will be waived, so if you don't like the supplier appointed to you it would be a good idea to switch sooner than later.

Who was Pure Planet?

Pure Planet was formed by the same team that created Virgin Mobile. This is made up of Andrew Ralston, Steven Day and Tom Alexander. Bringing their background in consumer marketing to the energy industry they hoped to be a supplier with a difference. They believed that the technological revolution that had transformed other industries had not yet had a full impact on the energy industry and aimed to set about changing this.

As a result, Pure Planet became the first all-digital energy supplier in the UK. By keeping their running costs low in this way, they could then sell sustainable energy for a reasonable and affordable price, even making it cheaper than non-renewable tariffs with other companies.

Was Pure Planet any good?

Pure Planet made quite an impact by being the first supplier to go digital-only and bringing their industry pedigree to the table. And customers seem to have responded well to their offerings. In general, the reviews have been very good and they are pleased with the service provided.

The reviews on Trustpilot were very good and they also scored well in the Which? annual energy supplier survey (you can find out more details about these scores below).

Overall, bills are low and arrive on time, customer service is good and the 100% renewable energy helps you to reduce your impact.

How green was Pure Planet?

Pure Planet was one of the UK’s few 100% renewable energy suppliers. All of their electricity came from renewable sources and it was the only energy company to be a member of the UN global compact working towards the 17 goals to transform our planet. It was also involved in a number of renewable energy projects around the UK.

The gas they supplied was 100% carbon offset which meant that all the carbon released by its use has been recaptured in other ways. Meaning you have a neutral energy footprint.

What was the Pure Planet fuel mix?

For their electricity, the fuel mix is 100% renewable, coming from sustainable energy sources such as wind and solar energy. None of their power comes from fossil fuels or nuclear power stations. All gas is 100% offset, making Pure Planet one of the greenest energy suppliers in the UK.

Pure Planet reviews

The reviews on Trustpilot score Pure Planet at 4.6 out of five. An impressive 89% of all reviews rated them as good or excellent, with particular praise for the ease of switching, good customer service and affordable pricing.

In the Which? annual energy supplier survey they came fifth out of the 35 providers reviewed. They received an overall customer score of 78% with full marks for bill accuracy and four out of five for bill clarity, digital tools and value for money.

All of the above is very impressive and way above the norm for energy companies in the UK. They did not perform so well in the Citizens Advice survey, only achieving three out of five – although this is also not a bad score.

How many customers did Pure Planet have?

Pure Planet had about 100,000 customers across England, Scotland and Wales.

A green power cord being plugged directly into a tree.

What made Pure Planet different?

There are a few things that set Pure Planet apart from the other providers on the market. The first is that they were the first energy company to be 100% digital. That means no paper bills or letters. You can control your energy using an app, getting bills online and giving you greater control over your energy use and spending.

The Pure Planet app is a 24/7 digital assistant. You can do all of the usual transactions, such as pay bills, check your balance and monitor your usage on the app.

Pure Planet also does all its customer services through the app, giving it greater functionality than a normal online portal.

The other major difference is that they offer 100% renewable electricity and 100% offset gas. They are one of only a few suppliers in the UK to offer this level of green energy. Although they have faced some criticism from Which? about misleading customers about the exact nature of their renewable energy.

Did Pure Planet have smart meters ?

Pure Planet offers smart meters, rolling out second-generation models (SMETS2) in 2021. It is currently installing these in homes of selected customers, before a general rollout later in the year.

Check your eligibility for a smart meter through the mobile app. You will be informed when installations are taking place in your area and can book an appointment online

If you already have a SMETS2, it will work with Pure Planet’s supply. However, if you have a first-gen meter, it will lose some of its smart functionality.

How often did Pure Planet bill?

Like most suppliers, Pure Planet bill once a month. You will receive a digital bill via email and also in your customer area on the app. They score very highly for the promptness of their bills so you can be sure to receive your bill on time each month.

Pure Planet: what other services did they offer

Pure Planet customers were eligible for the Warm Home Discount, a government scheme to help vulnerable people with their energy bills at certain times of the year. This is either through the Core Group or the Broader Group. Core Group members will have been notified by the government and the £140 discount will be made automatically.

How to apply for Warm Home Discount with Pure Planet

If you were a Pure Planet customer and think you could have qualified for the discount, you could've applied via the Warm Home Discount page on the website. Broader Group applications must be done each year. Remember that you are not guaranteed to receive it every year. The discount is applied on a first-come, first-served basis so don’t hang about making your application.

Contact Pure Planet

As Pure Planet offered 100% app-based service, there was no phone number or email address to contact if you had any issues.

How to contact Pure Planet ?

The only way to get in touch is via its website or using chat feature on your app. The chat function is designed to put you in touch with the right member of their customer service team.

How to complain about Pure planet?

If you would like to make a complaint, get in touch with Pure Planet via the app. You can also register a complaint with the industry regulator Ofgem if you feel your complaint has not been dealt with or handled in the correct manner.

What makes Nabuh Energy different?

If you have a prepayment meter, it can be very frustrating when choosing a new energy supplier and tariff. It can often feel as though your counterparts with standard credit meters get all the best tariffs. Nabuh Energy are dedicated to helping customers with Pay As You Go Meters to get a fairer deal on their energy. Not only does the brand offer good rates for prepayment customers, they also make life easier for customers who may find it difficult to top up.

For instance, as well as offering emergency credit, they also offer "Friendly Credit" during evenings, weekends and bank holidays. So you’ll never be left in the dark.

But it’s not just prepayment customers that can get a good deal with Nabuh Energy. They also offer competitive fixed-rate tariffs for customers with standard credit meters. With no early exit fees. Ever!

Who are Nabuh Energy?

Nabuh Energy is a small energy supplier based in Sheffield. They claim to have the best rates for customers with prepayment meters, and their ethos is built around getting a better deal for prepayment customers, who have generally been let down by the energy industry.

As their website states:

"Having observed the way prepayment customers are treated, we decided things needed to change. That's why we provide customers with energy that is low-cost and hassle-free".

Who owns Nabuh Energy?

Nabuh Energy is majority-owned by CEO Klaus Bach. Bach is a shareholder of Juhl Bach Holding. This is one of the biggest family-owned private companies in Denmark.

Are Nabuh Energy any good?

Although they do not offer renewable energy, Nabuh Energy can give you a good deal on your energy if you use a prepayment meter. Even if you have a standard credit meter, you may still get a very competitive energy deal with the brand.

Our opinion on Nabuh Energy

Nabuh Energy have market-leading tariffs for PAYG customers, a generous referral scheme, and safeguards to prevent you from running out of credit. However, their relative lack of renewable energy and less than stellar reviews may give some consumers pause.

Let’s take a look at Nabuh Energy’s performance in all the areas that matter the most to you as an energy consumer…

Nabuh Energy tariffs & prices

Nabuh Energy have built their brand around giving prepayment customers a cheaper energy deal. So let’s take a closer look at their tariffs to see if they live up to this claim.

Nabuh Energy offers 2 tariffs for prepayment customers and 2 for customers with standard credit meters. The prepayment tariffs are named "Lizzy" and "Grace", while the credit meter tariffs (paid by direct debit only) are called "Jack" and "Mel". Jack is the tariff for credit meter users while Mel is for smart meter users.

You can see details for all Nabuh Energy’s tariffs below. Monthly and annual energy costs are based on UK average energy consumption of 12,000 kWh of gas and 2,900 kWh of electricity per year. Unit rates are based on UK averages. Your rates may vary depending on your location. All prices are inclusive of VAT at 5%.

Is Nabuh Energy really cheaper?

Nabuh Energy may be one of the only energy suppliers in the country whose prepayment tariffs are actually cheaper than their tariffs for standard credit meters. However, all tariffs are below the Energy Price Cap of £1,138 per year for both gas and electricity.

Nabuh Energy: What other services do they offer?

Many energy companies offer additional services to complement their energy supply. Does Nabuh Energy offer any of these? Let’s find out...

Do Nabuh Energy do business tariffs?

Nabuh Energy does not currently offer business energy plans, as its ideological focus is squarely on the domestic market.

Do Nabuh Energy have smart meters? What smart meters do they offer?

Yes, Nabuh Energy offers smart meters for both prepayment and credit meter customers. The brand’s "Mel" tariff is designed exclusively for smart meter users.

What’s more, they offer and support the second generation SMETS2 meters. These will remain fully functional if you should switch to a new supplier. Something that isn’t always true of the earlier SMETS1 models.

With a smart meter, not only will you never need to report your meter readings again, you can be assured of accurate energy bills and keep a closer eye on your energy usage. Something that will benefit all energy consumers, no matter what kind of meter they use.

How to apply for the Warm Home Discount with Nabuh Energy

Unfortunately, Nabuh Energy does not offer the Warm Home Discount. This is a government initiative that offers vulnerable energy consumers a flat £140 discount on their energy bills over the colder months from September to April.

Energy suppliers are required to offer this if they have over 250,000 customers. As a smaller supplier, Nabuh Energy is not required to provide this discount. However, you may find that switching to the brand is works out cheaper on balance, even without the Warm Home Discount. Especially if you are on a PAYG meter.

Nabuh Energy customer reviews: What do their customers say?

Weighing up a supplier’s energy tariffs is all well and good. But at Papernest, we understand that energy prices are just one piece of the puzzle. A supplier’s reputation for customer service is every bit as important as pricing.

We can get an understanding of how customers feel about Nabuh Energy by looking at its Trustpilot page. Not only can this give us a brief overview of customer sentiment, it’s also a useful source of qualitative data from customer reviews.

Unfortunately, reviews have not been kind to the supplier on this platform. At the time of writing, Nabuh Energy has an aggregate customer score of 1.6 out of 5, making them a "Bad" supplier.

Nabuh Energy currently has a total of 427 customer reviews. Of which:

  • 42 (10%) were "Excellent"
  • 12 (3%) were "Great"
  • 11 (3%) were "Average"
  • 11 (3%) were "Poor"
  • 351 (82%) were "Bad"

Only 13% of reviewers rated Nabuh Energy as above average, while an 85% majority found them to be either "poor" or "bad". But there are positives to be mined from this gloomy overview.

Positive reviews mention a high standard of customer service, good value for money and ease of topping up.

Most of the negative reviews focus on technical issues and problems with topping up. However, other areas of concern include slow response times for issues and complaints, as well as long waits to speak to a customer service agent.

Nabuh Energy has responded to 90% of negative reviews on the platform, and usually respond within a week.

How green is Nabuh Energy?

Unfortunately, Nabuh Energy doesn’t have the greenest credentials. Although there are some renewables in the company’s energy fuel mix, most of its energy comes from natural gas. While this is cleaner than coal or oil it is, nonetheless, a fossil fuel.

Hopefully, Nabuh Energy will invest in more renewable energy in the future.

Nabuh Energy energy fuel mix

Nabuh Energy’s overall energy fuel mix is detailed below:

  • Natural gas- 72%
  • Coal- 6.3%
  • Nuclear- 8.2%
  • Renewables- 8.3%
  • Other- 5.2%

What makes Click Energy different?

Founded in 2015, Click Energy is relatively new. Nonetheless, their website insists that they have many years of experience in the Northern Ireland energy market, and is dedicated to proving to energy consumers that their is "a better way".

Click Energy has built its brand on providing consumers with a simple, clear energy choice that puts the customer first while also protecting the environment. Its slogan is "click for the climate", and all its new energy tariffs use 100% renewable energy. It also does not offer gas, making them one of Northern Ireland’s 4 electricity-only suppliers (along with Electric Ireland NI, Power NI, and Budget Energy.

They promise to be open and transparent about the way they work, and where / how they buy their electricity. They also promise to be clear and transparent in their pricing, making it easy to get in touch when you need them.

Who are Click Energy?

Click Energy is a new(ish) energy supplier with a clear focus on renewability, transparency, and customer service. As a small supplier, it is unclear exactly how many customers they have.

As well as supplying renewable domestic and commercial energy, the company also works with businesses to help them make green innovations. In February 2021, Click Energy was announced as a Silver Level Innovator in the Innovate NI Innovation Accreditation programme for its research in predicting energy prices with Ulster University.

Who owns Click Energy?

Click Energy was founded by Damian Wilson, the brand’s Managing Director.

Are Click Energy any good?

At first glance, Click Energy have everything you could want in an energy supplier. They’re deeply invested in renewability and innovation. They have a good selection of tariffs with reasonable prices, and they seem to genuinely care about delivering great customer service. But do the experiences of real customers reflect this? And are their prices among the most competitive for energy consumers in Northern Ireland?

Let’s dive a little deeper.

Click Energy tariffs & prices

Click Energy is an electricity-only supplier. If your home uses gas, you will need to get this elsewhere. Keep in mind, however, that this may still work out cheaper than opting for a dual-fuel tariff.

Below you can find the cost information associated with these tariffs.

Is Click Energy really cheaper?

That depends on who currently supplies your energy, the kind of meter you have, and when you use the most energy. If we assume Northern Irish average usage of 3,200 kWh per year, Click Energy’s prepayment tariffs are potentially cheaper than Budget Energy, SSE Airtricity and Power NI of you factor in the £15 credit for new customers.

Click Energy: What other services do they offer?

Click Energy has a few other services available to business and domestic energy customers. Let’s take a closer look at these here.

Do Click Energy do business tariffs?

Yes, Click Energy offers a selection of green energy tariffs for businesses. There’s even a "Rural Saver" tariff for farmers. Rates are negotiated on an individual basis. They depend on the size of your business, your energy consumption and your peak load hours.

Do Click Energy have smart meters? What smart meters do they offer?

Unfortunately, Click Energy does not currently offer smart meters. However, given that the UK government is keen to make smart meters available to all domestic and commercial energy consumers by 2025, this will hopefully change very soon.

How to apply for the Warm Home Discount with Click Energy

Energy suppliers with over 250,000 customers are required by law to provide the Warm Home Discount. This provides a flat £140 discount on the cost of energy through the colder months from September to March for elderly and vulnerable consumers.

However, as a much smaller supplier, Click Energy does not offer this discount. Nonetheless, prices may still be cheaper than using a larger supplier, even with the Warm Home Discount.

Click Energy customer reviews: What do their customers say?

The Papernest team is always on hand to help you find the right supplier and tariff for your needs. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do a little homework of your own.

Click Energy’s Trustpilot page is a good way to get an overview of customer sentiment. Be aware, however, that some reviewers mention the Australian version of Click Energy which is actually a completely different company to the irish version. As such, overall ratings should be taken with a grain of salt.

Click Energy has an overall customer score of 1.9 out of 5. This makes them a "Poor" supplier.

At the time of writing, Click Energy has only 16 customer reviews. Of which:

  • 1 (6%) was "Excellent"
  • 1 (6%) was "Great"
  • 1 (6%) was "Average"
  • 2 (13%) were "Poor"
  • 11 (69%) were "Bad"

Many negative and neutral reviews were of the Australian company. However, the 2 positive reviews were for the Irish version of Click Energy. Positive reviews focused on substantial monetary savings and ease of getting in touch with Click Energy. Negative reviews, however, cite poor customer service, and unexpected rises in energy costs.

On Reviews.io things are generally more positive, with 58% of customers saying that they would recommend the brand.

PFP Energy tariffs & prices

We all want to do business with an ethically-focused energy supplier. But let’s be realistic, here. Most of us also want to be able to save on our energy bills. We’ll take a look at PFP’s energy plans and prices. But first, let’s look at some basic information about the supplier.

Who are PFP Energy?

PFP Energy is a non-profit energy supplier from central Lancashire. Unlike most suppliers, they don’t have a board of shareholders. So not only can they charge reasonable energy rates without needing to worry too much about profits, they can also invest the money that they make into community ventures and improving their service rather than paying large salaries to executives. Hence the name, Profit For Purpose.

Where is PFP Energy based

PFP Energy is based in the docklands area of Ashton-on-Ribble in Preston, central Lancashire.

When was PFP Energy founded?

PFP Energy was founded in 2015. It is one of the smaller energy suppliers in the UK, with around a thousand customers.

Are PFP Energy any good?

As we can see, PFP Energy has some admirable goals. But are they, from an energy consumer’s point of view, a good supplier?

That’s a tricky one to answer as every energy consumer has a slightly different idea of what makes a "good" supplier. However, we can take a look at their tariffs and prices as well as the lived experiences of real customers to help you to make your own decisions about the brand.

PFP Energy tariffs

Below you can find the cost information associated with these tariffs.

Good Energy Variable Rate Tariffs

At the moment Good Energy offers one variable rate to their customers. With a variable plan, you can change supplier freely, but your prices will be subject to market fluctuations.

The costs associated with this tariff can be seen here:

Plan name Tariff type Type of fuel Is the tariff live? Standing charge (p/day) Unit rate cost (p/kWh) Average total annual cost (£/year) Exit cost (£/fuel) Green tariff?**

Good Energy Economy 7 Tariffs

Next to fixed and variable tariffs, Good Energy also offers Economy 7 tariffs to their customers.

As mentioned previously, these tariffs have two separate unit rates, one for peak hours of consumption and another for off-peak.

Pricing on these tariffs can be seen here:

Plan name Tariff type Type of fuel Is the tariff live? Standing charge (p/day) Day Rate (p/kWh)* Night Rate (p/kWh)p* Average total annual cost (£/year) Exit cost (£/fuel) Green tariff?**

* Assuming the average Economy 7 tariff user consumes around 58% of his energy on peak and 42% off peak.
** A tariff is considered a Green tariff when the supplier injects in the grid the same amount of renewable energy that is consumed.

Is PFP Energy cheap?

Yes, using these national average figures, PFP Energy does offer good value for money. These figures are fairly significantly below the current Ofgem energy price cap of £1,042 per year for gas and electricity. This figure is expected to rise to £1,138 in April 2021. So locking in your energy costs now with a fixed tariff might be prudent.

PFP Energy reviews

On PFP Energy’s Trustpilot page, the brand has an aggregate score of 3.9 out of 5. This puts the brand at the upper end of "Great" and into the realm of "Excellent".

Out of 3,600 reviews left by customers:

  • 2,024 (56%) were rated "Excellent".
  • 670 (19%) were rated "Great".
  • 194 (5%) were rated "Average".
  • 139 (4%) were rated "Poor".
  • 573 (16%) were rated "Bad".

As we can see, 75% of reviewers rate PFP as above average. That’s a very respectable score for such a small supplier.

Positive reviews often how quick and easy it is to make the switch to PFP. Many also mention that they have had positive interactions with customer service staff. Many mention the team member they spoke to by name, with the same handful of names popping up over and over again which is always a good sign. Positive reviews commonly describe customer staff as knowledgeable, helpful, warm, and friendly. Reviewers mention fast and decisive issue resolution and a personal, sympathetic approach to customer service.

Some customers also like the website’s design and ease of use.

Negative reviews include high prices and inaccurate estimated bills. Difficulty supplying meter readings was also mentioned, as was frustration dealing with the website’s chatbots and getting through to a member of the customer service team.

How long does it take to switch to PFP Energy?

Most PFP Energy customers are able to switch within 15 days. Of course, at Papernest, we can manage your switch from end-to-end to make sure it’s as fast and hassle-free as possible. If your switch takes longer than 15 days, you are entitled to £30 in compensation.

What makes PFP Energy different?

As we can see, being a non-profit organisation that puts customers before shareholders is a big part of what makes the company different from other suppliers. Its investment in community projects and charitable endeavours is a great incentive for the ethically minded. Helping them to do good while also saving money on their energy.

How green is PFP Energy?

Does PFP Energy’s commitment to renewability match its commitment to communities and its customers? Unfortunately, although PFP Energy does offer one 100% renewable energy tariff, it does not yet have a completely renewable energy fuel mix.

In fact, most of its energy (over 70%) comes from burning natural gas. While this is much cleaner than burning coal, it is nonetheless using a finite resource. Still, there’s every chance that PFP Energy will increase its share of renewables in the future.

PFP Energy fuel mix

PFP’s full energy fuel mix is as follows:

  • Coal 6.3%
  • Natural gas 72%
  • Nuclear 8.2%
  • Renewables 8.3%
  • Other fuels 5.2%

PFP Energy: What over services do they offer?

As a smaller supplier, PFP Energy is fairly light on additional services. It doesn’t offer things like boiler cover (at least, not yet). However, it does participate in some schemes that may be of benefit to customers.

Do PFP Energy have smart meters ? what smart meter does PFP Energy use?

Yes, PFP Energy uses smart meters. A smart meter can help energy consumers to take control of their energy bills by closely monitoring their usage. A smart meter comes with an In Home Display Unit that allows you to see how much energy you’re using in real-time. What’s more, it saves customers from having to report their monthly meter readings in order to keep bills and direct debits accurate. Energy usage data is transmitted directly to PFP Energy, so there are no more inaccurate estimated bills. Ever.

PFP Energy has stated that it exclusively installs SMETS 2 meters. These are the second-generation meters that will still remain fully functional, even if you switch energy suppliers in the future.

good energy

Do PFP Energy do business energy tariffs?

Yes, PFP Energy does offers business energy tariffs for small businesses and corporate businesses. Rates are negotiated on an individual basis. Your rates will depend on your location, how much energy you use, and your peak energy load hours.

How to apply for the Warm Home Discount with PFP Energy

If you’re an elderly or otherwise vulnerable energy consumer, the Warm Home Discount can give you a discount of £140 on your energy bills to cover the colder months from September through to March.

All energy companies are obliged to offer this discount once they have over 250,000 customers. Some smaller companies offer this voluntarily. However, PFP Energy is, unfortunately, not one of them. However, their prices are reasonably low, so you’ll probably get a better deal with them than with a larger supplier, even with the Warm Home Discount.

##Contact PFP

When something goes awry with your energy supply, or you simply need someone to clarify or explain something to you, you need to be able to get in touch with your supplier.

What should PFP Energy customers do?

As of right now, if you have not yet been contacted by British Gas, your new supplier, there is nothing to be done as a customer, besides take a meter reading. As you will see, everything is being taken care of, so there is no need to panic or look for measures to take - your energy will be supplied to you as usual, for instance.

What happened to PFP Energy?

PFP Energy is one of the many suppliers who have gone bust as a result of the current gas market climate. Indeed, as a consequence of post-Covid-19 activity reopening, the demand for gas has surged in the past few months. Since this is happening at the same time as a lack of gas supply in Europe and beyond, this means that wholesale as prices have drastically risen in the UK.

Since energy suppliers have to respect a certain price cap for their customers, the weakest suppliers have not been able to survive in this context, and have therefore had to officially go bust. PFP Energy was the 5th energy supplier to disappear in 2021, following a trend that started as early as January of that year.

Will my supply be interrupted?

Ofgem, the energy market regulator, has appointed British Gas to be the supplier that will take over all 82 000 domestic and 5600 non-domestic customers who used to belong to PFP Energy.

Therefore, your supply will not be interrupted at any point in time, and you will not be noticing any difference in that respect.

Should I continue paying PFP Energy meanwhile?

The general consensus is that yes, you should continue to pay your old supplier, and that therefore you should not be cancelling any payment method such as direct debit, standing order, or direct payment. You will be able to cancel whichever method is relevant for you once British Gas has come into contact with you and helped you setup your account details properly.

Should I take a meter reading?

Yes, and this is the only real step you have to actively take besides waiting to be contacted. Taking a meter reading as early as possible will help make any payment or contract subscription process go more smoothly. This applies whether or not you are planning to switch from British Gas to another supplier in the future.

What happens if I was in debt or credit to PFP Energy?

Depending on your situation, you may be owed money, or owe money to, PFP Energy. Since they have gone bust, it is understandable to wonder whether or not you will have to pay British Gas instead, and whether they will pay you if needed.

In terms of credit (money PFP Energy owed you), British Gas has declared it is ready to honour this credit on behalf of PFP Energy, and therefore pay back the appropriate sums to all affected customers. In the case of debt, the details will be worked out on a more case-by-case basis, so you'll have to wait until you are contacted to know exactly if and how you will pay this debt off.

British Gas to take over: will my bills and rates go up?

Depending on the energy plan you has under PFP Energy, you may end up temporarily paying more when you are transferred over to British Gas. The idea is that they have appointed all then ew customers automatically to a "deemed" contract. This deemed contract may correspond to the supplier's most standard tariff, meaning it is unlikely to be their cheapest deal.

You will however be free to shop around for other, better deals, but only once British Gas has properly set up your account and its details. You may stay with British Gas or look elsewhere if and when you do this.

Who chose British Gas as a replacement?

Ofgem is the regulatory authority which, in this current context, is making sure all consumers affected by the crisis still receive their usual supply of energy. As such, it is up to them to decide which energy suppliers are appointed to take over from different suppliers who have gone bust. British Gas was chosen to receive all old PFP Energy customers, just as they have previously done so for MoneyPlus Energy, Simplicity Energy, and more recently this month, Peoples' Energy.

When and how will I be contacted by British Gas?

Waiting to be contacted by British Gas is the main thing customers are currently being asked to do. Unfortunately, no specific date has been set for this. However, one can imagine that British Gas are doing everything they can to make sure that each and every customer is being taken care of properly and in as short a time frame as possible.

In terms of the method of contact, one thing to note is that the supplier will be using your home address as it is currently stated in official documents. If you have recently moved house, or are in the process of doing so, make sure your old address links back to your new one, or that the change has been made official.

Can I switch supplier immediately? [[Switching suppliers]

No, you cannot switch suppliers before you have been contacted by British Gas. If you have, or once they do, then you are free to browse the different offers which either British Gas or other active suppliers are currently offering energy consumers.

If you were already in the process of switching from PFP Energy or from another supplier who has now disappeared, then not to worry, as long as the request to switch has been properly received and processed, you will switch as planned.

British Gas tariffs in 2021: what are my options?

Once British Gas has contacted you and given you information regarding, amongst other things, how your credit and debt will be dealt with, you will be able to move to an energy deal other than British Gas's "deemed" contract. you can of course switch suppliers entirely, but if you wish to stay with British Gas, here are its main energy plans to date:

British Gas's variable tariff rates

A variable tariff follows the price evolutions of the British energy market, meaning that from month to month, you will not be billed the same way. This implies some uncertainty, but also means that you will be able to take advantage of the decreases in the cost of energy, since they will be reflected by your tariff.

Plan Tariff type Type of fuel Standing charge (p/day) Unit rate cost (p/kWh) Average total annual cost (£/year) Exit cost (£/fuel)
British Gas Standard Variable Variable Rate Electricity 27.40 p* 20.84 p* £ 1,034.09** £ 0.00
British Gas Standard Variable Variable Rate Gas 26.12 p* 4.01 p* £ 576.61** £ 0.00

Prices vary from one city to another, so we display national averages
** Based on 2,900.00 kWh of ⚡ and 12,000.00 kWh of 🔥 per year on average
Including 5% of VAT.
Exit fees are £0.

British Gas's fixed rate tariffs

On the opposite end of variable rate tariffs, fixed rate tariffs allow you to know exactly how you are being billed, since this cost does not change over period during which the tariff is set to be fixed. This period usually spans either 12 months or 24 months, after which the energy plan will change over to a variable rate tariff.

Plan Tariff type Type of fuel Standing charge (p/day) Unit rate cost (p/kWh) Average total annual cost (£/year) Exit cost (£/fuel)

British Gas's Economy 7 tariffs

So, just who are Boost Energy? Where do they come from and why might they appeal to customers looking to make a switch?

The first thing you need to know is that Boost Energy is an exclusive pay-as-you-go provider. They are the PAYG arm of OVO Energy. Their mission is to create energy that ‘works around you’. What this means is that Boost only offers prepayment tariffs where you purchase and pay for your energy up front.

With around 350,000 customers, they are one of the larger PAYG suppliers. The reason they are separate from OVO is that the company decided that customers would be better served to have a specific brand dedicated to each type of energy. But is Boost Energy any good? Let’s take a closer look.

Boost Energy tariffs

Boost Energy Prepaid Tariffs

Boost Energy only offers prepaid tariffs. With these plans, you can top up your meter and your credit depletes based on your consumption.

Costs associated with this tariff plan can be seen here:

Plan name Tariff type Type of fuel Is the tariff live? Standing charge (p/day) Unit rate cost (p/kWh) Average total annual cost (£/year) Exit cost (£/fuel) Green tariff?**
/ Prepayment Variable Electricity 31.32 p* 18.47 p* £ 668.325* £ 0 $UK_NRJ_BE_Elec_PAYG_green$

/ Prepayment Smart Gas 36.33 p* 3.14 p* £ 509.50* £ 0 $UK_NRJ_BE_Gas_PAYG_2_green$

Prices vary from one city to another, so we display national averages
* Based on 2,900.00 kWh of ⚡ and 12,000.00 kWh of 🔥 per year on average
** A tariff is green if each kWh consumed is compensated by the injection in the grid of a kWh of renewable energy.
Including 5% of VAT.

How much does Boost Energy charge per kWh?

As you can see from the table above, Boost Energy charges 14.37p per kWh of electricity. The average cost is 16.6 p per kWh. The rates for a kWh of gas are 3.73p per kWh, with the average being 3.8p per kWh.

What is the Boost Energy fuel mix?

Boost Energy does not offer the most sustainable fuel mix on the market. While it is making strides to offer greener energy, using sources such as wind power and solar power, green energy is not currently the provider’s main priority.

As of March 2019, 39.2% of its energy came from renewable sources. The rest came from natural gas. This is a way behind many UK energy suppliers that are providing 100% green energy, although it is ahead of the national average.`

Boost Energy reviews

In the annual Which? energy company customer survey, Boost came joint 20th out of 35, along with Utilita and Robin Hood. They received positive feedback for how they handled customer complaints, scoring 4 out of 5. But for bill accuracy and value for money they only received 3.5 out of 5.

Their sister organisation OVO came 9th in the survey, perhaps showing that customers prefer good value for money over customer service.

The Trustpilot rating for Boost Energy sees them register a score of 3.8 out of 5. This is neither bad nor exceptional. 70% of the reviews say their service was good or excellent.

How many customers does Boost Energy have?

Boost currently has around 350,000 customers. This makes a mid-to large-size energy provider in the PAYG range.

Are Boost Energy any good?

Judging by the customer reviews on sites like Which? and Trustpilot, Boost Energy’s services are good but not outstanding. People seem to be impressed with the customer service and features such as the Winter Wallet system. This does chime with the company’s stated aim of being there for their customers.

However, there seems also to be a fair amount of negative reviews focusing on the price of their services. Although, in Boost’s defence, as a PAYG provider they make no claims to be the best value energy provider. Rather, by using PAYG energy you can budget more effectively and avoid getting into debt.

What makes Boost Energy different?

Boost Energy say they are aiming to make managing your energy easier. They offer prepaid energy tariffs designed to make it easier for customers to keep track of their energy usage. This also allows them to take control of their billing. This may be preferable to the traditional credit model of estimated usage and direct debits which can lead to billing inaccuracies and debt.

Customers can use the app to top up and can also check their credit and get alerts when they are running low. Boost aims to give you more control over your prepaid energy than ever before. The apps appear on both Android and Apple platforms.

boost energy

How green is Boost Energy?

As we saw above, with around 40% of their fuel mix coming from renewable sources they are above the national average but a long way behind companies like Bulb and Octopus who offer a much greener energy supply.

Is Boost Energy cheap?

Boost Energy does not offer the cheapest prepayment tariffs. However, as we mentioned above, this is not their stated aim. Prices are reasonable, and the extra cost is made up for by good quality customer service. However, if affordability is important to you, we can help you to get a better deal on your energy. Get in touch on 0330 818 6225 to find out more.

Do Boost Energy have smart meters?

One of Boost Energy’s two tariffs is aimed at customers with smart meters. If you don’t have a smart meter, they can install one in your property so you can make use of the enhanced services. Contact Boost to find out more.

Boost Energy: What other services do they offer?

Two of their additional services are the Winter Wallet and Emergency Boost.

Winter Wallet

The Winter Wallet is designed to help you prepare for higher energy usage during winter. Use the Boost Energy app to set up a saving target, taking some of your credit in the summer and putting it into your ‘winter wallet’.

Emergency Boost

The Emergency Boost gives you extra credit when you have run out and don’t have the funds to top up. You can immediately borrow up to £30 of credit to ensure your energy supply stays on, paying it back when you can.

Do Boost Energy do business energy tariffs?

Boost Energy do not currently offer any business tariffs although its parent company OVO does offer business deals.

How to apply for warm home discount Boost Energy

Boost Energy is one of the few independent suppliers that offers the Warm Home Discount. This is a government scheme that provides credit towards energy bills during the winter months.

If you are eligible, you need to apply through the Boost website in the autumn for the year ahead. Core Group members do not need to apply. The Warm Home Discount is provided on a first-come, first-served basis, so apply as soon as you can.

If you would like to make a complaint, then you should get in touch with Boost using the above contact details. You can also register a complaint with the industry regulator Ofgem.

How to switch to Boost Energy

If you would like to switch to Boost, you can either contact them directly through the above channels or you can get in touch with our team to help you make the switch.

Our opinion on Boost Energy

If you are looking for good customer service and transparent pricing on a PAYG tariff, then Boost Energy is a good option. However, if you are looking for the best value energy or an energy mix that comes from mostly sustainable and renewable sources, then you might want to look elsewhere.

Ebico Energy: What Customers Need To Know in 2022

houses with solar panels

Who were Ebico Energy?

Ebico Energy were (and still are) a non-profit organisation dedicated to helping energy consumers combat fuel poverty. They supplied 100% renewable energy in conjunction with Robin Hood Energy. However, that changed in 2020 when British Gas bought out Robin Hood Energy.

Is Ebico Energy still trading?

While Ebico still exists and functions as a non-profit organisation, it no longer supplies energy. This is because Robin Hood Energy, who supplied energy to the brand, was bought out. As such, it was unable to function as an energy supplier. So new customers can no longer sign up to Ebico’s renewable energy tariffs.

What happened to Ebico Energy?

Usually when a small green supplier goes bust it’s because their ambition exceeds their capability. Or they encounter a terminal cash flow crisis which is exacerbated by a deterioration in customer service as the supplier struggles to keep up with its own growth.

However, that was not the case with Ebico, which enjoyed strong customer sentiment on Trustpilot. Even now, 75% of reviewers on the platform rate the brand as above average. It was simply a case of British Gas taking over Robin Hood Energy that signalled the end of Ebico as an energy supplier. A lot of other municipally-owned energy companies who were reliant on Robin Hood also had to cease trading, including:

  • Angelic Energy
  • Beam Energy
  • CitizEn Energy
  • Fosse Energy
  • Great North Energy
  • The Leccy
  • RAM Energy
  • Southend Energy
  • White Rose Energy
  • Your Energy Sussex

When did Ebico Energy cease trading?

Ebico Energy ceased trading in September 2020 when Robin Hood Energy was bought out by British Gas.

Who has taken over Ebico Energy’s customers?

All of Ebico Energy’s customers (as well as the customers of the brands mentioned above) were migrated to British Gas in September 2020. However, many customers have hardly noticed this, because as part of the agreement in purchasing Robin Hood Energy, British Gas promised to honour the rates currently paid by Ebico customers. They will also continue to be supplied with 100% renewable energy.

Can I still keep my Ebico Energy tariff?

Yes, you will still retain your Ebico Energy tariff for its full duration. However, if you are currently on a fixed-rate energy plan, you may find that when it expires, you have no choice but to switch to one of British Gas’ tariffs.

Given that British Gas are renowned for having some of the most expensive tariffs on the market, you may want to move to something that gives you better value for money.

That’s where we come in!

At Papernest, we pride ourselves in matching every household that uses our service with the perfect energy tariff. Let’s see what makes Bristol Energy worthy of your hard-earned money...

What makes Bristol Energy different?

Bristol Energy is one of a number of municipally-owned energy companies across the country. Municipally-owned energy companies are advantageous to energy consumers who care about ethics and renewability. Because they are completely beholden to their customers rather than taxpayers, they can potentially deliver green energy at better prices than their privately-owned counterparts. As well as offering 100% renewable energy, Bristol Energy offers carbon-neutral biomethane gas. This comes from Bristol’s municipal sewerage systems. Or, as Bristol Energy playfully calls it, "poo power".

Like many municipal energy suppliers, Bristol Energy was bought by a private company in late 2020. Nonetheless, the Bristol Energy brand has not been affected. It still retains the same tariffs, prices and strong focus on delivering clean energy and supporting local communities.

Who are Bristol Energy?

Bristol Energy is one of the few municipal energy suppliers still remaining today. It was founded in 2015 as a direct response to the rising prices and profiteering of private energy companies. It is committed not only to delivering renewable energy but combating fuel poverty, and investing in community projects. To date, the brand has added £12,000,000 of social value back to the city.

Who owns Bristol Energy?

Bristol Energy is now owned by Together Energy. Despite this, the brand remains active, and Bristol Energy is no less committed to its green energy and social targets.

Are Bristol Energy any good?

Despite their new ownership, Bristol Energy is still an excellent choice or those looking for an affordable, renewable, ethical energy supplier. Bristol Energy may no longer be under municipal ownership, but it still strives to deliver on its promises to its customers in the wake of the acquisition by Together Energy. With green energy at reasonable prices and a strong investment in local communities, customers know that the money they spend on their energy is doing real good.

The Papernest team understand that every energy consumer has slightly different criteria for how they define a "good" supplier. So let’s see how Bristol Energy measure up in the ways that matter most to you...

Bristol Energy tariffs & prices

Bristol Energy offers relatively modest range of tariffs that’s easy for newcomers to understand. Nonetheless, there’s something there for everyone, with two fixed-rate tariffs and one variable tariff. Take a look at the range of tariffs and the energy costs for each.

Monthly / annual energy costs provided are based on national average consumption. Energy suppliers currently specify this as 2,900 kWh of electricity and 12,000 kWh of gas per year.

Of course your bills will vary if your usage is significantly more or less.

All costs are inclusive of VAT at 5%.

BE Standard Green

This is Bristol Energy’s variable-rate tariff. It offers 100% renewable electricity and 50% carbon-neutral gas.

You can see the rates and standing charges in the table below:

Energy Cost Price
Electricity unit rate 16.76p per kWh
Electricity standing charge 22.65p per day
Gas unit rate 2.97p per kWh
Gas standing charge 25.21p per day
  • Estimated monthly costs: £83
  • Estimated annual costs: £996
  • Early exit fee: N/A

BE Simply Green

The first (and best value) of Bristol Energy’s fixed-rate tariffs, this also offers 100% renewable electricity and 50% carbon-neutral gas with prices locked in for 12 months. Uncommonly for a fixed-rate tariff, it has no early exit fees, so you can switch suppliers at any time.

You can see the rates and standing charges in the table below:

Energy Cost Price
Electricity unit rate 15.52p per kWh
Electricity standing charge 24.44p per day
Gas unit rate 3.10p per kWh
Gas standing charge 20.78p per day

  • Estimated monthly costs: £82
  • Estimated annual costs: £984
  • Early exit fee: N/A

BE Super Green January ‘23

This is Bristol Energy’s greenest tariff with 100% renewable and 100% carbon-offset gas. It also offers great value for money, given that prices are locked in for 25 months with no early exit fees.

Rates are as follows:

Energy Cost Price
Electricity unit rate 15.61p per kWh
Electricity standing charge 24.52p per day
Gas unit rate 3.17p per kWh
Gas standing charge 20.86p per day

  • Estimated monthly costs: £83
  • Estimated annual costs: £996
  • Early exit fee: N/A

Is Bristol Energy really cheaper?

Bristol Energy certainly has the potential to be cheaper than you’re currently paying for your gas and electricity. Your annual spend on all of its current tariffs will be below the Ofgem energy price cap which currently sits at £1,042 per year for both gas and electricity. This is expected to rise in April 2021, so it’s definitely worth considering a fixed-rate tariff at present as variable rate plans may rise in line with the price cap.

Bristol Energy: what other services do they offer?

Bristol Energy is deeply invested in using "profits for purpose". As well as delivering energy, it is also heavily invested in supporting community projects in and around Bristol, supporting the growth of local businesses, creating jobs, and supporting ambitious initiatives to combat fuel poverty.

Do Bristol Energy do business tariffs?

Bristol Energy have previously offered business energy tariffs. However, since the acquisition by Together Energy, Bristol Energy’s business customers have been moved to Yü Energy. You can get a business energy quote from them by clicking here.

Do Bristol Energy have smart meters? What smart meters do they offer?

Yes, Bristol Energy offer smart meters to both new and existing customers.

A smart meter can be a fantastic way to reduce your energy spend as it transmits your usage data directly your supplier without the need to take or submit meter readings of your own. You also get an In Home Display (IHD) device to help you to better track your usage in real-time.

Bristol Energy offers both first-generation SMETS1 meters and second-generation SMETS2 meters, depending on where you live.

Traditionally, the disadvantage of first-generation smart meters is that they cease to transmit your usage when you switch energy suppliers. However, Bristol Energy is working on a remote upgrade to mitigate this which should be rolled out to all customers by the end of 2021.

How to apply for the Warm Home Discount with Bristol Energy

Bristol Energy voluntarily participates in the Warm Home Discount scheme. However, they can only offer this to customers in the "core group" i.e. energy consumers of pensionable age.

The Warm Home Discount entitles vulnerable energy consumers to a flat discount of £140 discount on their bills through the colder months from September to March.

You can check your eligibility and make an application by visiting Bristol Energy’s support page.

Bristol Energy customer reviews: What do their customers say?

At Papernest, we understand that the value of energy companies is best measured by the customers who use them.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at what Bristol Energy’s customers have to say about the brand.

At the time of writing, Bristol Energy’s Trustpilot page has a total of 1,856 customer reviews, and an aggregate customer score of 3.4 out of 5. This puts them in the middle of the "Average" band.

Reviews are a very mixed bag. Of the 1,856 reviews left by customers:

  • 977 (53%) were "Excellent"
  • 300 (16%) were "Great"
  • 97 (5%) were "Average"
  • 80 (4%) were "Poor"
  • 402 (22%) were "Bad"

Although reviews are fairly mixed, a 69% majority of customers give Bristol Energy a rating of either "Great" or "Excellent".

Positive reviewers focus on helpful and patient customer service staff, good value for money, and ease of managing their account online. Some reviewers mention specific members of the customer service team by name, which tends to indicate that someone has gone above and beyond.

Negative reviews, on the other hand, point to length issue resolution, difficulty getting in touch with the customer service team, miscommunications, and billing errors. To their credit, Bristol Energy have responded to 97% of negative customer reviews in the platform, typically providing a response within 24 hours.

How green is Bristol Energy?

Bristol Energy is one of the UK’s many green energy suppliers, exclusively delivering 100% renewable energy. The brand is invested in a combination of direct power purchase agreements, purchases from local renewable generators (via Feed in Tariffs and the Smart Export Guarantee), green energy certificates and investment in low-carbon solutions.

Bristol Energy energy fuel mix

Bristol Energy offers 100% renewable energy from a combination of wind, solar and hydropower. It does not, however, list the exact percentages of this on the website.

Contacting Bristol Energy

The Papernest team understand that while cheap, renewable energy is attractive, it’s of little consolation when you’re having trouble getting in touch with your supplier. Nobody wants to spend their precious time waiting on hold to speak to a customer service advisor.

You can contact Bristol Energy by calling 0808 281 2222. Lines are open from 8am - 6pm Monday to Friday. An independent survey last year found that on average the company took 3 minutes and 45 seconds to answer the phone.

Or, if you prefer, you can email them at customercare@bristol-energy.co.uk.

Bristol Energy: How to pay

As with most energy suppliers, the quickest and easiest way to pay your Bristol Energy bill is via direct debit. Booking a smart meter installation, or taking monthly meter readings, will ensure that your direct debits match your usage.

Alternatively, if you prefer to pay monthly, you can do this via credit or debit card through your customer portal on the website, or over the phone. You can also pay in cash, cheque or postal order at any PayPoint or Payzone location, or at your local post office. You can also pay by bank transfer.

How to refer a friend to Bristol Energy

Bristol Energy has a great referral scheme. Every time you refer a friend, not only do you (and they) get £20, Bristol Energy also donates £20 to its Fuel Good Fund which supports local communities and the environment. So you can do some good while also helping friends save money.
To refer a friend, simply give them your 9 digit account number, and ask them to enter it into the "marketing code" box when signing up online, or to give it to a member of the team if signing up over the phone.

How to complain about Bristol Energy

If you have a comment or complaint about Bristol Energy, you can submit it to the team over the phone or via email. They will then have 8 weeks to resolve the complaint to your satisfaction. If they are unable to do this within 8 weeks, you can submit your complaint to the energy ombudsman service.
