What makes Ecotricity different?

Ecotricity is on a mission to rid the UK energy market of fossil fuels. Many green energy suppliers offer carbon-neutral biomethane gas. This usually comes from agricultural, plant and animal waste. Ecotricity’s green gas, however, comes from 100% plant sources. None of its gas comes from animal agriculture.

While they are not the cheapest energy supplier on the market, they do have an ethical price promise. So you can be sure that the money you pay is invested in green endeavours rather than enriching board members.

Who are Ecotricity?

Ecotricity is a green energy supplier based in Stroud, Gloucestershire. Unlike many other green energy suppliers, it doesn’t buy wholesale renewable energy. It invests in generating its own. It built its first windmill in Gloucestershire in the mid-90s and has been adding to its portfolio of wind and energy farms every since.

Who owns Ecotricity?

Ecotricity is owned by renewable energy activist Dale Vince. Vince started the company with a single windmill that he had used to power the old army truck in which he lived.

Are Ecotricity any good?

Ecotricity: what other services do they offer?

Aside from providing domestic energy, Ecotricity is involved in all kinds of green innovations. These include wind turbines that are small enough to be installed in major urban centres (wittily known as "urbines"). Ecotricity has also been involved in the development of innovative vehicles that do not use fossil fuels such as the Nemesis electric sports car and the award-winning Iron Horse superbike.

Do Ecotricity do business tariffs?

Yes, Ecotricity also provides business energy tariffs to enterprises of all shapes and sizes that want to improve their green credentials with 100% renewable energy and green gas. SMEs, and large enterprise-level companies alike can benefit from green energy plans. There are also energy plans specifically suited to the needs of property developers.

Business rates are not advertised on Ecotricty’s website, as its commercial energy plans are made to measure. Your rates will depend on the size of your company, its location, how much energy it uses, and its peak energy load hours.

Do Ecotricity have smart meters? What smart meters do they offer?

Yes, Ecotricity offer smart meters to new and existing customers. As a green energy consumer, it makes sense that they are keen to help energy consumers to reduce energy waste and take control of their energy spending.

With a smart meter, energy consumers need never again take and report their own meter readings. Usage data is transmitted automatically to the supplier. So there’s no need to worry about inaccurate estimated bills if you pay by direct debit.

Ecotricity are currently rolling out both first-generation SMETS1 meters and second-generation SMETS2 meters, depending on the area in which you live. The primary difference is that SMETS2 meters will continue to be fully functional and transmit usage data in the future if you should switch energy suppliers in the future. SMETS1 meters generally cannot do this, although suppliers may be able to issue a remote upgrade that gives them the same functionality as a SMETS2 meter. Ecotricity’s website does not yet indicate whether or when they will issue this to customers with SMETS1 meters.

How to apply for the Warm Home Discount with Ecotricity

Ecotricity voluntarily participates in the Warm Home Discount scheme.

The Warm Home Discount is a government initiative, administrated by energy suppliers. It is designed to help support vulnerable energy consumers to heat their homes in the colder months, offering a flat discount of £140 discount on energy in the colder months from September to March. You may be eligible for this discount if you receive a UK pension (core group) or claim qualifying income-related benefits (broader group).

How green is Ecotricity?

Ecotricity is quite possibly the greenest energy supplier in the UK. Not only does it offer 100% renewable electricity, it generates this electricity independently, rather than purchasing it wholesale.

It also offers 100% green biomethane gas from exclusively plant-based sources.

There are a number of ways to pay your Ecotricity bill. The most easiest, and cheapest, is to pay by direct debit. Getting a smart meter, or taking monthly meter readings will ensure that the amount you pay is always an accurate reflection of your usage.

If you prefer to pay monthly, you can do this by credit or debit card over the phone, online, or via the Ecotricity app. You can also pay in cash at any PayPoint location, by BACSor CHAPS, or by sending a cheque / postal order in the post.

These figures are based on a medium-use house just outside of London.
As you can see from the table above. You can choose from either a fixed rate tariff or a variable rate deal. The type of plan you choose will depend on your circumstances and your preferences.

Why choose a variable rate deal?

When you look at the table above, you’ll see that the cheapest unit rate for electricity is available on the variable tariff. This can make it seem like this is the most affordable option.
However, the amount you pay per unit of gas and electricity can vary when you choose a variable plan. This is because the price you pay is linked to the wholesale price of energy in the UK. If wholesale prices go up, you’ll pay more for your energy supply. If they go down, your monthly payments should drop too.
Although you won’t know exactly how much your gas and electricity will cost from month to month, opting for a variable rate deal does give you the freedom to switch whenever you want. Why choose a fixed rate tariff?

Fixed rate tariffs offer a little more security than variable rate deals. When you sign up to a fixed rate plan, you’ll agree a price per kWh for your gas and electricity. This price will stay the same for the duration of your contract, no matter what happens in the wholesale energy market.
Because the price you pay per kWh for gas and electricity won’t change during your fixed period, it can be easier to budget for this type of tariff. However, it’s important to note that, while the amount you pay for a unit of energy won’t change, your total bill can go up and down. This is because your bill is based on your consumption, so the more energy you use, the more you’ll pay.
The main downside of a fixed rate tariff is that you’re tied to your supplier for a set period of time. If you find a better deal during this time and decide to switch, you’ll have to pay an exit fee before you can leave. Tonik Energy: A guide

Tonik Energy tariffs & prices

Tonik Energy was a supplier who aimed to supply British households with greener and cheaper energy. Their stated aim was to try and halve their customers energy bills by 2020. While admirable this seems it might have been a stretch too far for a fledgling energy company.

As well as cheaper energy, Tonik also aimed to supply solar panels and other green technology to help homeowners take back control of their domestic energy supply. Again, this was another admirable aim and one that does hint at the energy future for many of us here in the UK. However, again it seems their business model was not quite sustainable at the current time.

We should all be working towards producing as much of our own energy as possible and reducing our energy footprint. Tonik Energy proved popular with its customers for helping them to do just that.

When did Tonik Energy go bust?

They ceased trading in October 2020. The industry regulator Ofgem appointed Scottish power to take on the 130,000 customers who were with Tonik. If that applies to you then you should have already been contacted by Scottish Power. If you have not been, then you need to get in touch with them to find out what has happened to your account.

Will my terms have changed?

No, Scottish Power has agreed to honour all the existing contracts and terms as laid out by Tonik. That means that in essence only the name of your supplier will have changed. Your deal will not change until it is due to expire. However, at this point you may be automatically transferred to the standard variable rate with Scottish Power, which may be different to what you were expecting.

Can I switch?

If you are not happy with Scottish Power or simply want to try and find a more suitable deal then you are entitled to do so. All contract exit fees have been waived so you are free to make the switch without incurring any penalties at this time.

What made Tonik Energy different?

As well as Tonik’s focus on green energy and more sustainable methods of energy production, they also prided themselves on excellent customer service. It was more than just talk. Customers were very impressed by the customer service they received, often commenting on how friendly and helpful they were. They also answered the phone very quickly.

Of course, it wasn’t all good news. They did receive their fair share of negative reviews on sites such as Trustpilot. Some customers reported having issues with making complaints and issues with their service. Other negative comments revolved around the website being down and not being able to access their accounts online.

All the tariffs offered by Tonik were 100% renewable and came with no exit fees attached. Their three tariffs included Go Green Exclusive, 1 Year Greenest and 2 Year Greenest. They also featured 3% interest on any credit in your account.

As mentioned, all electricity provided by Tonik was 100% renewable and there was the option to carbon offset any of the gas you bought through them. 91% came from solar energy and 9% came from wind power.

Did Tonik Energy have smart meters ?

Tonik Energy did offer smart meters to help customers control how much energy they were using. They also offered solar panels and batteries to help customers produce their own power. They also offered electric vehicle chargers as part of their packages.

What happens now after Scottish has taken over Tonik Energy’s customers?

Under Ofgem’s Supplier of Last Resort (SoLR) scheme, customers who were switched over to Scottish Power were reassured that there would be no disruption to their energy supply.

Scottish Power said they will take on all outstanding credit balances, including the money owed to both current and former domestic customers. They are committed to a smooth transition and extend a warm welcome to all former Tonik Energy customers.

What should Utility Point customers do?

As of right now, unless you have ben contacted by your new supplier, EDF, there is nothing specific to be done on consumers' end. As frustrating as it may be, the situation is being dealt with for you, as efficiently as possible. So, while it might feel like you lack control over the circumstances, Ofgem and other involved parties are doing what they can to make sure you have uninterrupted access to an energy supply, whatever the context.

Will my supply be interrupted?

Amongst all this worrying context, here is some good news: no energy supply will be interrupted for any electricity or gas consumer. In fact, it is with that goal in mind that old suppliers' customers are being mass-transferred to new suppliers all at once. So on this front, there is nothing to worry about.

Should I continue to pay Utility Point in the meantime?

Do not cancel any of the payment methods you might have been using for your Utility Point contract - wait for EDF to contact you, and they will sort out the details of your new payment system. In addition, remember that you are, in effet, between two suppliers: this means that paying Utility Point makes sense at this point in time.

Should I take a meter reading at this time?

Yes, absolutely - in fact, this is really the only thing you need to do besides wait for EDF to contact you. Taking a meter reading will give you the necessary information to be able to complete your transfer from Utility Point to EDF. Once this is all set up, having this meter reading will also prove helpful for switching to another supplier or energy deal, when the time comes of course.

If you are wondering about smart meters and their compatibility with EDF's consumption readings, there is no worry to be had there. EDF's technicians are more than ready to make automatic readings with your smart meter.

How will my credit or debt with Utility Point be dealt with?

If you owe money to Utility Point, or if they owed you over the course of your energy plan with them, you have every right to ask yourself what will become of this credit or debt.

This depends on the new supplier you get - and with EDF, the good news is that your credit balance will be honoured. For those in debt, the debt balance will also be transferred over to EDF, who will sort out payment details with you in due course.

EDF to take over: will my rates and bills go up?

We can't give you a definitive answer to this: whether or not your bills will go up depends on what your old deal was, and on the "deemed" tariff EDF will have set you up with. So in reality, you'll only be able to know this yourself, once your account has migrated over to EDF properly and they can come into contact with you to inform you of this tariff.

If we assume you were on a cheap tariff, which may well be the case since you were with Utility Point, and if we further assume that EDF will have put you on a standard tariff, we can say that it is likely that you will pay more than before.

However, we remind you that you are under no obligation to keep this tariff, or even to remain with EDF, once they have contacted you. Indeed, at that point you will be able to shop around for other, cheaper options, whether with EDF or with yet another supplier.

Who chose EDF to be my new supplier?

Ofgem, the Office of Gas and Electricity Markets, is the regulator who has been appointing new suppliers to replace all of those who have so far gone bust. These replacement suppliers are chosen to take over a specific customer base, in bulk: they are not appointed to specific, individual customers, for obvious reasons.

The new suppliers are chosen on the basis that they are stable, dependable, and therefore usually bigger suppliers, estimated to be able to survive the crisis and therefore keep these new customers, as well as their current ones, supplied with energy without crashing.

How and when will I be contacted by EDF?

EDF has declared it is contacting new customers in waves, so as to get to all of them as quickly as possible. They have not, however, given any set dates or deadlines for this. This means you'll have to sit tight if EDF hasn't gotten around to your case yet. Once you're in their database, everything should go smoothly.

EDF will contact you via your current address: this means you should make sure it is properly and officially registered. It also implies that if you have recently moved home, or are in the process of doing so, you should be paying extra attention to signalling this address change.

Can I switch to a supplier other than EDF now?

Until EDF contacts you, no, you may not ask to switch suppliers: your transfer over to EDF has already begun, and you must make sure your situation is stabilised before you make any moves.

What if I had already switched to another supplier?

If your immediate reaction to seeing Utility Point disappear was to switch to another supplier, then this may well go through - it depends on whether or not the request was properly sent and received. We invite you to check in with the supplier you were attempting to switch over to. If the switch didn't go through, you can consider yourself part of the majority who is being transferred, as planned, to EDF.

When can I switch?

When can you switch? You may be able to guess from what we've been saying: you simply have to wait for EDF to contact you. At that point, you can choose the energy plan you want - although given the context, our experts would suggest you pay extra attention to how stable your potential new suppliers are before you make your choice. This switch will not cost you any exit fees.

EDF's variable rate tariff

Variable tariffs imply that the price you pay depends on the current market prices, rising and falling with it proportionately. This allows you to take advantage of any decreases in price, but also makes it more difficult to predict what your monthly energy costs will be.

EDF does offer a variable tariff, but only one. Here it is, both for gas and for electricity:

EDF's Economy 7 tariffs

Economy 7 tariffs give the customer two different rates, the day rate and the night rate, which correspond to an on-peak and off-peak time period respectively. This means that if you are flexible with your energy consumption habits, you can take advantage of the E7 system and pay the majority of your energy consumption at the lower rate. What made Utility Point different?

As utility experts, we understand that each energy supplier, however, big or small, has something special and unique. So, what made Utility Point different?

As a smaller supplier, Utility Point promised a more personal approach to customer service, providing rewards that matter to customers, and rewarding loyalty. They aimed to promote simplicity in managing your energy bills, as well as providing 100% renewable energy at no extra cost. Something that not every smaller supplier can offer.

Who were Utility Point?

Based in the picturesque coastal town of Poole in Dorset, Utility Point was a relative newcomer to the energy industry. Its customer base was still relatively modest (exact numbers have yet to be divulged, though its website numbers customers in the thousands). However, with renewable energy and customer-focused rewards, it hoped to stand shoulder to shoulder with larger suppliers by rewarding loyalty and simplifying customers’ energy supplies.

Who owned Utility Point?

Utility Point was an independent supplier, previously known as Washington Energy Ltd. The company directors were Ben Bolt, John Bolt, Stephen Calland and Simon Yarwood.

Were Utility Point any good?

If you had spent years with the "Big 6" and never felt rewarded for your loyalty, Utility Point’s offer would likely have resonated with you. But were they a good supplier?

Utility Point had some of the best-priced energy tariffs on the market combined with renewable energy and very attractive rewards and referral schemes. Although all of their tariffs incurred an early exit fee. Although customer reviews were mixed, there was a lot to recommend this small supplier.

Of course, the Papernest team understand that every energy consumer is looking for something different in a supplier. As such, it’s important to measure their performance in all the areas that matter the most to energy consumers.

Utility Point: what services did they offer?

Aside from their energy tariffs, did Utility Point offer any other service that may have been of value to new customers? As a smaller supplier, Utility Point did not offer broadband or boiler cover deals like its larger counterparts often do. But it did offer some impressive extras.

Aside from low prices, Utility Point also offered an impressive rewards scheme that benefitted customers. This free benefits programme was completely free and offered discounts of up to 60% on a range of high street brands including:

  • Boots
  • Debenhams
  • The Body Shop
  • Halfords
  • ASDA
  • Argos
  • Samsung
  • Wilko
  • and more

You could use these discounts as often as you like and you would never be charged for this service as long as you remained a Utility Point customer.

Did Utility Point do business tariffs?

Like most smaller energy suppliers, Utility Point did not offer any business tariffs.

Did Utility Point have smart meters? What smart meters did they offer?

Unfortunately, Utility Point did not offer nor support smart meters. If you already had a smart meter, you would still have been able switch to Utility Point. However, your meter would revert to behaving like a standard credit meter. However, you would still be able to get better meter reads and better visibility of your spending via your In-Home-Display device.

How to apply for the Warm Home Discount with Utility Point

Smaller suppliers do not typically support the Warm Home Discount, and unlike their larger counterparts they are not legally required to. However, Utility Point did offer this scheme voluntarily, so that vulnerable energy consumers could benefit from even greater savings on their energy.

The Warm Home Discount is a government initiative facilitated by energy suppliers. It offers a flat £140 discount on energy between the months of September and March when the weather is coldest. You may be eligible for this discount if you are a UK pensioner (core group) or claiming certain income-related benefits (broader group).

Utility Point customer reviews: What did their customers say?

At Papernest, we appreciate that low prices aren’t the only thing that energy consumers look for in a new supplier. They also need to know that they’ll get the level of support and customer service that they expect. We also understand that the best way to measure this is to see what real customers say about the brand.

Utility Point’s Trustpilot page was something of a mixed bag. They had a total of 9.652 reviews, and an aggregate customer score of 3.3 out of 5. This put them squarely in the middle of the "Average" band.

Of the 9,652 reviews left by customers:

  • 5,191 (54%) were "Excellent"
  • 1,320 (14%) were "Great"
  • 447 (5%) were "Average"
  • 383 (4%) were "Poor"
  • 2,311 (24%) were "Bad"

That’s a 68% majority of customers who gave Utility Point a rating of either "Great" or "Excellent".

Positive reviews focused on the excellent value for money, ease of switching to Utility Point, and great customer service from polite, patient and professional staff. Many reviewers also expressed their enthusiasm for the company’s loyalty perks and referral scheme.

A number of reviewers were also very happy with the great deals they got when renewing their energy contracts.

Negative reviews, however, focused on delays getting overpayments refunded, difficulty getting in touch with customer service staff, slow issue resolution, and inaccurate estimated bills.

How green was Utility Point?

Utility Point offered 100% renewable energy. However, unlike the greenest energy suppliers, it did not generate its own. All renewable energy was purchased wholesale with Guarantees of Origin (GOOs) certificates, as required by Ofgem.

It did not offer carbon-neutral or carbon offset gas.

Although Utility Point offered 100% renewable energy, it had not disclosed how much of this came from solar, wind, hydro or biomass.

There were two ways to contact Utility Point. If you preferred to contact them over the phone, you could call 03455 57 78 78. Lines were open from 9am - 6:30pm Monday to Friday.

Utility Point: How to pay

There were several ways to pay your Utility Point bill. The most convenient, and cheapest, was to pay by direct debit. As Utility Point did not offer smart meters, it was important to take monthly meter readings in order to ensure that the amount you paid was an accurate reflection of your usage.

If you preferred to pay monthly, you could do this by credit or debit card over the phone, online, or at your bank / post office. You could also pay by BACSor CHAPS, or by sending a cheque in the post.

How to refer a friend to Utility Point

Utility Point had a generous referral scheme. For every friend, relative or colleague you referred to the service, both you and they earned £25 each from Utility Point. And there was no limit to the number of people you can refer.

How to complain about Utility Point

If you had a complaint about Utility Point, you could register this either over the phone, or via the email address listed above. You could also send your complaint in the post to:

Why choose a fixed rate tariff?

With a fixed rate tariff, the amount you pay per unit for your gas and electricity will stay the same for the duration of your contract period. In this case, that would be 12 months. The main benefit of this is that your energy bill won’t be affected by ups and downs in the wholesale energy market, the rate you pay will stay the same no matter what.
Fixed rate tariffs can make it easier for households to budget for their energy bills. These types of deals also mean that the rate you pay for your gas and electricity won’t rise unexpectedly.
However, fixed rate deals tie you into a contract for a set period of time. If you want to leave your supplier, or switch to another deal, before your contract runs out, you’ll have to pay an exit fee. So Energy charges an exit fee of just £5 per fuel.

Why choose a variable rate tariff?

Unlike fixed rate tariffs, variable rate deals don’t lock you into a contract. This means you’re free to switch suppliers whenever you want. This can be a real benefit if you’re planning on moving home in the near future or if you like to switch regularly to keep prices low.
If you choose a variable rate tariff, the rate you pay for your gas and electricity can go up and down every month. This is because it’s affected by the amount your supplier pays on the wholesale market. If wholesale prices go up, your bill will follow suit. On the other hand, if wholesale prices fall, your energy payments could be cheaper than ever.

How much does So Energy charge per kwh?

As the tables above show, So Energy charges between 16.95p and 17.15p per kWh for electricity and around 2.9p per kWh for gas.
However, this rate can vary depending on where you live in the country. This is because it costs more to get gas and electricity to homes that are remote and further from energy generation points.
If you decide to opt for a variable rate deal, you may also find that the rate you pay for your gas and electricity fluctuates throughout the year.

Is So Energy cheap?

So Energy tariffs are very competitive when compared to other deals on the market. They are especially affordable in comparison to other green energy suppliers.

How green is So Energy?

One of So Energy’s biggest selling points is its green electricity. The supplier only offers 100% green energy on its tariffs, so any customer that signs up to a So Energy deal will automatically reduce their carbon footprint.

Although So Energy uses 100% renewable electricity, the energy that arrives at its customers’ homes won’t come exclusively from renewable sources. This is because all properties are supplied with electricity from the National Grid. No matter which source this electricity comes from, it’s mixed together in the grid before being distributed throughout the country.
However, for every kWh of electricity So Energy customers consume, the supplier will put the same amount of renewable energy back into the grid. This means that, by signing up to So Energy, you can help to boost the amount of green electricity in the UK National Grid.
Of the green electricity that So Energy uses, the majority (62%) comes from on and off shore wind farms. The rest comes from a mixture of solar, hydro, biomass and tidal. The table below shows the most recent renewable fuel mix for So Energy:

Although other energy suppliers offer green energy, there aren’t many others that offer green energy and low prices. Throw in good customer service, and it’s easy to see why So Energy is attractive to new customers. So Energy places a firm focus on customer service. How much does Spark Energy charge per kWh?

The amount that Spark Energy charges for a kWh of electricity varies significantly between tariffs. At the moment, their cheapest kWh rate is 15.07p. This is available on the Move In Saver Prepayment tariff.
The most expensive kWh rate available from Spark Energy is 22.03p. This can be found on the supplier’s Move In Saver Monthly Cash/Cheque tariff.
However, when selecting a Spark Energy tariff, it’s important to compare the rate per kWh with the standing charge. Spark, like many energy companies, tend to either offer tariffs that have a low standing charge and high kWh rate, or that have a high standing charge and a low cost per kWh.
For example, for the two tariffs mentioned above, the cheap Move In Saver Prepayment tariff has a standing charge of 30.41p while the more expensive Move In Saver Monthly Cash/Cheque tariff has a standing charge of just 15.24p.
If your household consumes a lot of energy, it’s a good idea to opt for a tariff with a low unit price and a high standing charge. However, if you’re a low consumption household, you may well be better off choosing a deal with a low standing charge and higher unit cost.

Is Spark Energy cheap?

Spark Energy claims to offer some of the most affordable tariffs around. The supplier says that it always offers at least one tariff that’s cheaper than the average annual dual fuel bill as published by Ofgem.
However, just because it has one tariff that’s below average, doesn’t necessarily mean that Spark Energy is cheap. To find out if they are the most affordable energy supplier for your household, call our Switch Plan and compare the best deals around.

How green is Spark Energy?

Unlike most UK energy companies, Spark Energy generates its electricity using just two fuel sources: Natural gas and renewables.
According to the Spark Energy fuel mix, the supplier gets around 51.9% of its electricity from renewable sources and 48.1% from natural gas.

Spark Energy reviews are generally positive. The company seems to do reasonably well when it comes to keeping its customers happy and dealing with issues and complaints. However, over the past few months, ratings have started to drop with more and more 1-star reviews appearing for the brand.
On the Trustpilot review site, Spark Energy gets an overall score of 3.7 out of 5. That puts it in the ‘Average’ category. Of the 30,000 reviews posted on the site, 57% rate Spark Energy as ‘Excellent’, 13% rate it as ‘Great’ and 22% rate the energy supplier as ‘Bad’.

What makes Spark Energy different?

One of the main differences between Spark Energy and other energy suppliers is that the brand has aimed its services at the rental market. Spark Energy works with estate agents and social housing landlords across the country and provides energy to hundreds of thousands of renters throughout the UK.

Who owns Spark Energy?

Spark Energy started out life as an independent energy supplier. However, in 2018 it became part of the Ovo Energy brand. Ovo chose to keep the Spark Energy name and branding, so many customers didn’t realise that the supplier had in fact changed hands.
In January 2020, Ovo merged with SSE Energy. As part of the integration of the two companies, all Spark Energy customers will be moved over to SSE Energy services.

When will I be switched to SSE and will I pay more?

All current Spark Energy customers will be moved onto SSE tariffs by the end of 2021. Customers should be moved onto tariffs that offer similar rates to those they pay now. However, as SSE is a different company, there is a chance the amount you pay for your energy will go up or down following the merge.

I don’t want a contract with SSE, can I switch? Will I be charged exit fees?

If you’re currently a Spark Energy customer and don’t want to move to SSE, you’re free to switch to a new supplier. Due to the merger between the companies, you won’t be charged exit fees if you want to switch suppliers, even if your current fixed term period is yet to expire.

Will SSE take on my unresolved complaint/credit/debt to Spark Energy?

If your Spark Energy account is in credit, this money will be protected when the company switches over to SSE. If your account is in debt, you’ll still have to pay this money back when SSE takes over.
When they take over, SSE will get in touch with you to let you know how much you owe or how much you have in credit. It’s always best to wait to hear from them before making any payments. In the meantime, take regular meter readings to ensure you have an accurate record of your usage.
If you had made a complaint to Spark Energy that was yet to be resolved, you’ll need to raise the issue again with SSE. SSE will then review your complaint to see if it’s still relevant and will let you know their decision.

How long does it take to switch to Spark Energy?

If you’re switching to Spark Energy from another supplier, the switch should take around 21 days. What should Avro Energy customers do right now?

As of right now, if you have not yet been contacted by your new supplier, Octopus Energy, there is nothing you should really be doing as a customer. In terms of receiving energy to your household, it will be business as usual, and the only thing to do is to wait until your new supplier contacts you.

Will my energy supply be interrupted?

No, neither your gas nor your electricity supply will be interrupted as Avro Energy disappears. This is why Ofgem has been appointing new suppliers so swiftly: the goal is to protect customers from ceasing to receive energy in their households. There is therefore nothing to be done on your end of things concerning this aspect of the crisis.

Should I continue to pay Avro Energy by direct debit, standing order, or direct payment?

Whatever your payment method was with Avro Energy, the general consensus is that you should not be cancelling any payment systems as of right now. Instead, wait for Octopus Energy to contact you, to make sure everything is in order and that they can deal with questions of credit and debt properly.

Should I take a meter reading?

We recommend, as does Ofgem, that you take a meter reading as early as you can. This will contribute to making sure your contract transfer goes as smoothly as possible. It will also make it easier for you to switch plans or suppliers in the future, if you wish to do so.

What happens if I was in credit or debt to Avro Energy?

If you owed Avro Energy money, or if they owed you in turn, the idea is once again to wait for Octopus Energy to sort this out for you. However, your new supplier has said they will honour any credit owed by Avro Energy to old customers. The issue of debt is a little more up in the air, but Octopus Energy will sort this question out on a case-by-case basis.

Will my bills and rates go up with Octopus Energy?

It is hard to know whether or not your specific bills will go up, as this depends on the tariffs you were on before. However, we do know that Octopus Energy has automatically assigned a "deemed" contract to you, which is likely to be their most standard tariff, aka the Flexible Octopus variable rate tariff. This may or may not imply a higher rate than before for you, and if it is, don't worry - once the supplier has contacted you, you will be free to shop for different, cheaper energy plans.

Who chose Octopus Energy to take over Avro Energy's customers?

Ofgem (the Office of Gas and Electricity Markets) is the regulator who has been appointing new suppliers to replace the old ones as they disappear. Octopus Energy was therefore chosen because it was considered safe enough to take on Avro Energy's 580 000 customers.

How and when will I be contacted by Octopus Energy?

A lot will change for you once Octopus Energy contacts you: you will be able to switch plans or suppliers and therefore go back to picking your own energy deals and tariffs.

They will be contacting you as soon as possible, but do remember that they have a considerable amount of new customers to go through. You may therefore have to wait for a while before your contract is dealt with and your credit and debt issues are addressed.

Octopus Energy and its administrators will be contacting you thanks to your current official address. This should therefore not present a problem unless you are in the middle of moving home, in which case you must make sure your old address redirects to your new one.

Can I switch suppliers or plans right now?

If you have not been contacted by Octopus Energy, the answer is no. You will have to wait for your account to properly be set up, and for the terms of your temporary deal to be specified, before you can make a move towards other suppliers or deals. Fundamentally, though, you still have the freedom to choose the energy plan you wish to follow, according to your own criteria.

Do I have to remain with Octopus Energy now that Avro Energy has stopped trading?

Again, not really: the mass transfer is simply a temporary measure designed to make sure all energy consumers still receive the energy they need every day. You can therefore shop for contracts presented by any and all available suppliers once Octopus Energy has contacted you officially.

I was already in the process of switching suppliers: what now?

If your initiative to switch suppliers was properly sent and processed by whichever new supplier you chose, then the switch will go as planned. Your credit balance will be protected in the process.

What made Avro Energy different?

If you’re a sucker for a good David vs Goliath story, Avro Energy is undoubtedly appealing.

Avro Energy was created out of a desire to compete with the "Big 6", simplifying energy consumers’ usage and billing while saving them money. It has been rated "best value for money" in the 2019 energy industry awards, and scored an overall customer satisfaction score of 81%. Their range of tariffs was eclectic but not so populous as to be confusing.

In an independent review of 25 UK energy companies, Avro came in third place. Any supplier who’s able to make it to the top three is arguably worth considering.

Who were Avro Energy?

Avro Energy was a small energy supplier based in Nuneaton, Warwickshire. It aimed to deliver "simplicity and savings" to energy consumers. They offered electricity and dual-fuel tariffs, although they did not offer gas-only energy plans.

Who owned Avro Energy?

Avro Energy’s Managing Director was Jake Brown. Brown worked in law before setting up Avro Energy, out of the desire for "a different approach to simplistic supply".

Were Avro Energy any good?

It’s understandable that many who are disillusioned with the "Big 6" might gravitate to a smaller, scrappier energy supplier like Avro Energy. But was Avro Energy a good supplier?

Avro Energy was one of the best-priced suppliers on the market, with an excellent record for customer service. The only things letting the side down is the relative lack of renewables in their energy fuel mix and lack of 100% renewable tariffs. Some might also bemoan the lack of an incentive or referral scheme.

Avro Energy’s absolutely had the potential to be cheaper for most households. Even the brand’s most expensive tariff was significantly lower than the Ofgem Energy Price Cap. This currently stands at £1,042 per year for both fuels. However, this is expected to increase in April 2021.

Experts recommended looking into a fixed-rate tariff if you chose Avro Energy. Not only would you get better value for money, you would insulate your household from rising energy prices in the wake of Brexit and the pandemic.

Did Avro Energy have smart meters? What smart meters did they offer?

Unfortunately, as a smaller supplier, Avro Energy was not currently able to offer smart meter installations. However, its website stated that it hoped to be able to offer these in the near future. If you already had a smart meter, they were likely to be able to support it if it is a second-generation SMETS2 meter.

To check which generation of smart meter you have, check the serial number. If it starts with 19P, it’s a first-generation meter. If it starts with 19M, it’s a second-generation meter.

How could you apply for the Warm Home Discount with Avro Energy?

As a smaller supplier, Avro Energy was not legally required to offer the Warm Home Discount. However, it still offered this voluntarily. So, if you struggled with the cost of heating your home in the winter months, you may have been eligible for the scheme.

This government initiative offers a flat £140 discount on energy between the months of September and March. Energy consumers of are of pensionable age (core group) or in receipt of income-related benefits (broader group) may be eligible for this discount.

The comparatively few negative reviews focused on difficulty navigating the website, billing issues and inaccuracies, and difficulties when moving house or switching tariffs. Some particularly disgruntled reviewers cited communications difficulties with staff members, slow responses to complaints, and expensive billing errors.

How green was Avro Energy?

Avro did not offer 100% renewable energy yet. Indeed, for a long time, Avro Energy had not disclosed its energy fuel mix on its website at all. In February of 2021, however, Avro Energy disclosed its energy fuel mix for April 2019-March 2020.

Although we can see that they got some of their energy from renewables, they had not yet begun to offer any 100% renewable tariffs.

Contacting Avro Energy

The Papernest team understand the importance of being able to contact your supplier quickly when you have an important question or something goes awry.

There were a number of ways to contact Avro Energy. Many would have preferred to call them on 0330 058 2005. Their phone lines were open from 9am - 4pm Monday to Friday.

An independent survey found that Avro Energy took 18 minutes 46 seconds to answer the phone. However, they were much faster than average when it came to email queries, responding in just 1 hour and 57 minutes on average.

It was cheapest and easiest to pay your Avro Energy bill via direct debit. Be sure to take monthly meter readings to ensure that your direct debit is always representative of your usage. This will usually be adjusted every 3 months.

If you preferred to pay monthly, you could do so by credit or debit card via Avro’s website or over the phone.

Utilita currently offer 13 different tariffs, offering a mix of both electricity, gas and dual fuel options. Smart Energy is their leading tariff for customers with smart meters, which makes up 90% of their customer base. The way this tariff works is that it charges two different rates for power. The first, Unit Rate 1 is for the first 2kWh of energy used, and Unit Rate 2 for all energy used after that.

The rates also vary according to how you choose to pay. Customers who pay by direct debit on a credit meter can get a slightly better deal that those using prepay meters.

How many customers does Utilita have?

As of January 2021, Utilitas has around 800,000 customers which represents a 2.6% market share of the UK energy market.

Are there any Utilita reviews?

Utilita’s reviews are generally good but not without some issues. They score four out of five stars on review site Trustpilot, with 69% of reviews rating the company as either good or excellent. The negative comments tend to be focused around lapses in customer service and billing issues. But this is on the whole a good score for an energy provider.

Billing was also an issue with the Citizen’s Advice survey, with only around 80% of customers saying they received accurate bills on time.

In the annual Which? customer energy survey, Utilita came 20th out of the 35 energy companies rated. Customers seemed to have issues with how complaints were handled and value for money. They got an overall score of 68%.

Are Utilita any good?

As you can see from the review information above, Utilita scores relatively well in some areas but there is definitely room for improvement. They could offer better value for money and the billing needs some work.

That being said, they score much higher than some other companies and for a supplier of their size it is not a bad performance.

What is the Utilita fuel mix?

All suppliers in the UK are required by Ofgem to publish information about their fuel mix. The aim of this is to put pressure on energy companies to use more renewable energy. So, how does Utilita perform for its fuel mix?

  2. Natural gas makes up 60% of its fuel mix
  3. 18% is nuclear

How green is Utilita?

As you can see from the above statistics, Utilita does not score all that well in terms of how green its energy is. At just 9% from renewable sources this is well below the national average of 33%. They rely heavily on fossil fuels and nuclear power. So, if you are looking for a supplier to help reduce your carbon footprint, then it may be better to look elsewhere.

What makes Utilita different?

Utilita stands out from the crowd in a number of ways. The most obvious is their use of smart meters. Back in 2008 they were the first energy company to offer smart meters to their customers, a practice which has now been widely adopted across the board.

Its aim is to give customers total control over their energy, and with 90% of customers now having smart meters installed, it is delivering on these promises. The smart meters mean customers can top up online by app or text, as well as over the phone and at PayPoint outlets.

They have no standing charge, making them one of the only suppliers in the UK not to do so. That means if you don’t use any energy then you don’t pay anything. Although rates per kWh unit are higher.

They have also opened up a number of regional hub sites where you can speak to a member of staff face to face.

How much does Utilita charge per kwh?

This depends what tariff you are on, what time of the day it is and how much energy you have already used. There are also separate tariffs for both gas and electricity. For more information about the exact costs of a kWh of energy, then consult the tariff tables above.

Is Utilita cheap?

Utilita is committed to always being cheaper than the Big Six energy companies, however, this only applies to prepayment customers, which makes up the vast majority of their customer base.

As a mostly prepayment supplier (although they do have credit tariffs too) their energy is not the cheapest on the market. That means choosing a fixed rate deal with a credit meter will be cheaper with multiple other suppliers. They score three out of five for affordability with Which?.

However, it is not just about the cost of energy per kWh. Utilita offers smart meters which help you to keep a much closer eye on what you are using, using energy in a more efficient way. Prepayment options also help you to economise and keep an eye on your spending.

Utilita also does not have any standing charges, which means you only pay for what you use. This can help to keep costs down if you are careful about what you use.

How to complain about Utilita

If you are a Utilita customer and are not happy with the service you have received, you should first take it up with them directly. You can get in touch in any of the ways above and ask to speak to a customer service representative.

If you are unhappy with the way your complaint has been handled, then you can contact the energy industry regulator Ofgem. They will be able to escalate your complaints and seek a satisfactory resolution should you have a legitimate grievance.

Our opinion on Utilita

Utilita is a great option if you want to be on a smart meter and prepayment tariff. They have a choice of tariffs to suit your needs and this can help you to keep your energy costs down. They are dedicated to using smart meters, which is admirable, and can help you to monitor your energy use and use energy in a more efficient way

However, if you would rather have a credit meter or are interested in renewable energy for your home then it may be better to look elsewhere. They get less than 10% of their energy from renewable sources, with the vast majority coming from natural gas. There have also been some issues with billing accuracy.

Do OVO Energy have smart meters? What smart meters do they offer?

Yes, OVO Energy offers smart meters to new and existing customers. In fact, you will only be able to access the brand’s best value tariff with a smart meter. A smart meter communicates your usage data straight to the supplier. No need to take meter readings or pay more for inaccurate estimated bills.

OVO currently offers second-generation SMETS2 smart meters. These use a secure DCC network, and unlike their first-generation counterparts they will continue to communicate usage data to your new supplier if you switch. How to apply for the Warm Home Discount with OVO Energy

If you’re struggling to heat your home in the winter months, you may be eligible for the Warm Home Discount.

If you are of pension age (core group) or receive income-related benefits (broader group) you may be eligible for this discount. Details of the 2022/2023 are not finalised yet. Shell Economy 7 Tariffs

Shell also has Economy 7 plans available for people who have an economy 7 meter.

Yes, the supplier also offers affordable green tariffs for commercial customers from microbusinesses to enterprise-level companies. Business rates are not advertised online as they are negotiated with companies on an individual basis. Rates vary depending on the size of your business, its location, how much energy it uses and its peak energy load hours.

Do Shell Energy have smart meters? What smart meters do they offer?

Yes, Shell Energy offers smart meters to new and existing customers. A smart meter transmits your gas and electricity usage data directly to the supplier. So you don’t need to worry about taking monthly meter readings or getting inaccurate estimated bills from your supplier.

Their website states that they now offer second-generation SMETS2 smart meters. This means that if you choose to switch to another supplier after a while, your smart meter will still retain its full functionality.

Who is the cheapest energy supplier in the UK?
There is no simple answer to this question. There are a number of factors that determine the cost of energy, such as where you live, how much energy you use, and (depending on the type of meter) what time of day you use it. Wholesale energy prices, which fluctuate constantly, also affect the price.

How to apply for the Warm Home Discount with Shell Energy

If you’re of pension age or if you receive income-related benefits, you may be eligible for the Warm Home Discount to heat your home more affordably in winter. This is a government initiative run in conjunction with energy suppliers. Under this scheme, vulnerable energy consumers can get a flat £140 discount on energy in the colder months between September and March.

How green is Shell Energy?

Shell Energy offers 100% green energy tariffs. Despite this, however, it is not among the greenest energy suppliers on the market. The greenest suppliers generate their own renewable energy and buy it from their customers via Feed in Tariffs and the Smart Export Guarantee. While Shell is currently investing in its own green energy infrastructure, at present it only purchases renewable wholesale energy and sells it on to the consumer.

It also offers carbon-offset gas. While this is good, it is not as eco-friendly as 100% green biomethane gas from farm waste.

The supplier’s fuel mix is 100% renewable. However, its website does not state how much of its energy comes from solar, wind and hydropower.
