What now for Orbit customers?

There is not much you can do at the moment. Your transfer from Orbit to Scottish Power should happen automatically. Further than that the best thing to do is to wait until Scottish Power contact you. With them you can discuss your options.

What happened to Orbit Energy?

Orbit Energy, like many other suppliers in the UK has gone bust because of the energy crisis. Their costs skyrocketed due to the high wholesale costs for gas and electricity. Their revenues however did not keep up as they were limited by the energy cap. The losses started heaping up and drove Orbit out of business in November 2021.

Will I be cut-off from supply?

Ofgem has special regulations in place to prevent this from happening. You will automatically be transferred to Scottish Power. Both companies will make sure that your supply will be handled correctly.

Should I keep paying Orbit Energy?

You have to keep paying your bills. Orbit and British Gas will together with Ofgem make sure that your switch will be handled correctly. Until the process is finished you could keep receiving bills from Orbit which you should continue paying.

What happens if I have credit or debt at Orbit?

It depends. It could be that Scottish Power will take over all credit and debt from Orbit. This would mean that nothing would happen for you, only that you would repay the debt to Scottish Power. Or it could be that Orbit will deal with the credit/debt themselves. This depends on the supplier themselves what they choose.

Will I pay more at Scottish Power?

The chance is high that you will pay more. The current circumstances at the energy market and the Ukraine war has led suppliers to charge higher prices to offset their costs. There might be a chance that you could be in touch with Scottish Power to discuss the options.

Can I keep the same contract at Scottish Power?

Because the switch is regulated by Ofgem, you will be put on a ¨deemed¨ contract at Scottish Power. Because there are so many new customers coming in for Scottish Power, it would be very hard to individualise new plans. In a later stage, you could be in touch with Scottish Power potentially, to discuss if there are any other options available.

When will Scottish power contact me?

Normally within a few weeks. If that is not the case don´t hesitate to reach out to their customers service to make sure everything is okay.

Do I need to stay at Scottish Power?

Although you can switch. It is probably best to wait for a bit to do so. Firstly, wait until your transfer to Scottish Power has been handled correctly. Then, given the current situation in the energy market, it is difficult to find cheaper rates when you switch. Waiting to see how the war develops is probably best.

I was in the middle of switching to a different supplier. What should I do?

Your old and new supplier will handle your switch as normal. You probably won´t have to do anything.

Scottish Power tariffs in 2021: what can I choose from?

Scottish Power has single tariffs and dual fuel options. For both types, you can choose between variable and fixed rates depending on your preference. In the table below we display the average annual costs for Scottish Power plans.

Plan Tariff type Average Electricity annual cost (£/year) Average gas annual cost (£/year) Average total annual cost (£/year)

Exit fees are £0, besides the 1 Year Fixed Price Energy, 1 Year Fixed Price + Boiler, and 2 Years Fixed Price + Boiler plans, where the exit fee is £30.

Fixed tariff

When you have a fixed contract you pay the same price for your energy for the entire duration. This gives you some security and prevents your bill from rising too much.

Variable tariff

Under variable tariffs, your price actually fluctuates according to the market prices. Your security that you don´t have sudden increases in price is gone. However, in return, you gain more flexibility to switch supplier without exit costs. Scottish Power also allows you to choose standard variable tariffs. In the case your price will go up, the supplier has to let you know within 30 days.

Scottish Power Tariffs

Scottish Power has many options available, look below to see some of the more common plans!

Who were Orbit Energy?

Orbit Energy were quite a young company, founded in 2018. The company was headquartered in London, while their parent companies Energy Global Investments and Genie Energy were situated in Australia and the US.
Orbit had close relations with Shell Energy.

How green was Orbit Energy?

Orbit started offering green energy from 2019 onwards. Orbit Energy only uses Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin certified products.
All of the electricity that Orbit Energy uses is backed up by certificates of Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin, or REGOs. This shows that the energy really does come from green sources and is great news for customers who want to reduce their carbon footprint at the same time as lowering their monthly energy bills.
Their gas, however, is not from renewable sources, which lower´s their overall sustainability levels.

Orbit Energy fuel mix

Prior to going green, Orbit Energy’s fuel mix was as follows:

Fuel Orbit Energy National average
Coal 1.66% 3.90%
Natural Gas 18.95% 39.40%
Nuclear 2.16% 16.60%
Renewables 75.87% 37.90%
Other 1.37% 2.20%

What can customers do?

Right now it is just a matter of waiting until you get contacted by British Gas. Which should have happened by now or will happen soon. With them, you can discuss the terms of your contract.

What happened to Bristol Energy?

Energy costs have been rising exorbitantly in recent months as a result of the energy crisis. However, suppliers could not raise the prices they were charging to customers because of the energy price cap. This has led a lot of companies to incur losses on each customer. Only the larger companies with large reserves were able to withstand these losses, and Bristol Energy, unfortunately, officially went bust on the first of January 2022.

Will my energy supply be interrupted?

No you will not be cut off from supply. Ofgem has set up procedures for automatic transfers for customers at suppliers that go bust. In this way, you will be guaranteed to continue to receive your gas and electricity.

Do I pay any bills that I receive from Bristol Energy?

Yes you have to. You will keep paying to Bristol Energy until the transition has been completed. British Gas will be in touch with you when that has happened. From that moment onwards you will start paying British Gas. British Gas will also be in touch on any credit or debit that is open at your account and how that will be handled.

Can I remain with the same contract at British Gas?

In general this is not the case. Often when you are automatically switched from supplier, you receive a ¨deemed¨contract which you cannot choose. In some cases, you can be in touch with British Gas to see what options you might have.

How and when will British Gas contact me?

Normally this takes around a few weeks. If British Gas have not been in touch yet in a very long time you can also contact them yourself.

Will my bills go up at British Gas?

Prices on the energy market are soaring following the Ukraine war and the energy crisis. The recently updated Energy Price Cap saw a sharp increase in the maximum chargeable tariff. This implies that it is very likely that your bills are going to be higher after the switch. We continue below with the tariffs that British Gas charged in the past period.

British Gas tariffs

British Gas offers a wide range of plans to their customers. In this section, we outline the prices for the most common plans.

British Gas average annual total tariff costs

Prepayment and Economy 7 rates

British Gas also has several options for other types of contracts such as prepayment rates and Economy 7 rates. On the following page you can have a look at the fixed rates, prepayment energy rates and economy 7 rates of British gas.

Am I allowed to switch supplier?

You are free to switch supplier. Note that at the moment, the energy market is very heated due to the Ukraine conflict escalating. Many suppliers actually do not take new clients currently or charge very high prices if you do decide to switch.

Do I have to stay with British Gas?

If you like to switch there are possibilities to switch from British Gas. However, switching to better rates will be extremely hard at the moment. Also, as British Gas is one of the largest supliers, it is not likely that they will get busted any soon. Therefore, it might be a good option to remain at British Gas until the energy market´s situation has gone back to normal.

What happens if I was in the process of switching suppliers when Together Energy went bust?

Nothing should happen. Your old and new suppliers will finish the transfer process as normal.

What made Bristol Energy different?

Bristol Energy was one of a number of municipally-owned energy companies across the country. Municipally-owned energy companies are advantageous to energy consumers who care about ethics and renewability. Because they are completely beholden to their customers rather than taxpayers, they can potentially deliver green energy at better prices than their privately-owned counterparts. As well as offering 100% renewable energy, Bristol Energy offered carbon-neutral biomethane gas. This came from Bristol’s municipal sewerage systems. Or, as Bristol Energy playfully called it, "poo power".

Like many municipal energy suppliers, Bristol Energy was bought by a private company in late 2020. Nonetheless, the Bristol Energy brand was not affected. It still retained the same tariffs, prices, and strong focus on delivering clean energy and supporting local communities.

Who were Bristol Energy?

Bristol Energy was founded in 2015 as a direct response to the rising prices and profiteering of private energy companies. It was committed not only to delivering renewable energy but combating fuel poverty, and investing in community projects. To date, the brand had added £12,000,000 of social value back to the city.

Who owned Bristol Energy?

Bristol Energy was owned by Together Energy. Despite this, the brand remained active, and Bristol Energy was no less committed to its green energy and social targets.

Were Bristol Energy any good?

Despite their new ownership, Bristol Energy was still an excellent choice or those looking for an affordable, renewable, ethical energy supplier. Bristol Energy still strived to deliver on its promises to its customers in the wake of the acquisition by Together Energy. With green energy at reasonable prices and a strong investment in local communities, customers know that the money they spent on their energy was doing real good.

Was Bristol Energy really cheaper?

Bristol Energy certainly had the potential to be cheaper than you’re currently paying for your gas and electricity. Your annual spend on all of its current tariffs will be below the Ofgem energy price cap which currently sits at £1,977 per year for both gas and electricity. It’s definitely worth considering a fixed-rate tariff at present as variable-rate plans may rise in line with the price cap.

Bristol Energy: what other services did they offer?

Bristol Energy was deeply invested in using "profits for purpose". As well as delivering energy, it was also heavily invested in supporting community projects in and around Bristol, supporting the growth of local businesses, creating jobs, and supporting ambitious initiatives to combat fuel poverty.

Did Bristol Energy do business tariffs?

Bristol Energy had previously offered business energy tariffs. However, since the acquisition by Together Energy, Bristol Energy’s business customers had been moved to Yü Energy. You can get a business energy quote from them by clicking here.

Did Bristol Energy have smart meters? What smart meters did they offer?

Yes, Bristol Energy offered smart meters to both new and existing customers.

A smart meter can be a fantastic way to reduce your energy spend as it transmits your usage data directly your supplier without the need to take or submit meter readings of your own. You also get an In Home Display (IHD) device to help you to better track your usage in real-time.

Bristol Energy offered both first-generation SMETS1 meters and second-generation SMETS2 meters, depending on where you live.

Traditionally, the disadvantage of first-generation smart meters is that they cease to transmit your usage when you switch energy suppliers. However, Bristol Energy was working on a remote upgrade to mitigate this which should have been out rolled out to all customers by the end of 2021.

Bristol Energy customer reviews: What did their customers say?

Let’s take a look at what Bristol Energy’s customers have to say about the brand.

At the time of writing, Bristol Energy’s Trustpilot page has a total of 1,856 customer reviews, and an aggregate customer score of 3.4 out of 5. This puts them in the middle of the "Average" band.

Reviews are a very mixed bag. Of the 1,856 reviews left by customers:

  • 977 (53%) were "Excellent"
  • 300 (16%) were "Great"
  • 97 (5%) were "Average"
  • 80 (4%) were "Poor"
  • 402 (22%) were "Bad"

Although reviews are fairly mixed, a 69% majority of customers gave Bristol Energy a rating of either "Great" or "Excellent".

Positive reviewers focus on helpful and patient customer service staff, good value for money, and ease of managing their account online. Some reviewers mention specific members of the customer service team by name, which tends to indicate that someone has gone above and beyond.

Negative reviews, on the other hand, point to length issue resolution, difficulty getting in touch with the customer service team, miscommunications, and billing errors. To their credit, Bristol Energy have responded to 97% of negative customer reviews in the platform, typically providing a response within 24 hours.

Bristol Energy

How green was Bristol Energy?

Bristol Energy was one of the UK’s many green energy suppliers, exclusively delivering 100% renewable energy. The brand was invested in a combination of direct power purchase agreements, purchases from local renewable generators (via Feed in Tariffs and the Smart Export Guarantee), green energy certificates and investment in low-carbon solutions.

Bristol Energy energy fuel mix

Bristol Energy offered 100% renewable energy from a combination of wind, solar and hydropower. It did not, however, list the exact percentages of this on the website.

ESB Energy tariffs & prices

ESB Energy tariffs

ESB Energy offered four tariffs: two fixed rate tariffs, one variable rate tariff and one EV tariff for customers who charge their electric vehicles at home. Both single and dual-fuel tariffs were available. Below is a list of their former available tariffs and the rates per kWh.

The fixed rate tariffs were fixed for either 1 or 2 years. They were available for both standard single rate meters and economy 7 meters. They did not offer any prepay tariffs.

If you had a smart meter, you could switch to ESB but they did not guarantee that the smart functionality would continue to work, depending on the type of meter you had.

Tariff Name & Type Electricity Standing Charge (per day) Electricity Unit Rate (per kWh) Gas Standing Charge (per day) Gas Unit Rate (per kWh)
Brighter Future 12 v7 (12 months fixed)/td>

16.67 16.48p 18.13p 2.81p
Brighter Future 24 v7 (24 months fixed) 16.86p 16.67p 19.34p 3p
Brighter Future 24 EV Tariff v7 (24 months fixed w/ electric vehicle) 16.86p 16.67p 19.34p 3p
Variable Electricity and Gas 21.1p 16.45p 25.82p 2.96p

Both fixed rate tariffs included an exit fee of £30 per fuel.

When compared with the UK average rates of 14.37p, for electricity and 3.80p for gas per kWh, you could see that ESB prices for electricity were a little more expensive than the average but their gas prices were more affordable.

How much did ESB Energy charge per kWh?

The UK average rates per kWh for both fuels were 14.37p for electricity and 3.80p for gas. ESB Energy rates for electricity per kWh were around 16.5p depending on your tariff. Their gas prices were more affordable at between 2.5 and 3p per kWh.

Was ESB Energy cheap?

ESB was not the cheapest supplier on the market. The average cost of a kWh of electricity was around 16.5p, which is more than the 14.37p national average. Their gas prices were cheaper though. However, you also had to add in standing charges. Overall, average usage on the standard variable rate would cost around £1,011 a year. The price cap was £1,042.

What was the ESB Energy fuel mix?

All of the tariffs on offer from ESB, apart from their standard variable rate, offered 100% renewable electricity. These tariffs used 100% renewable electricity from a mix of solar and wind generation. However, the exact percentages of the mix were not published.

They had also invested in other forms of renewable energy such as hydroelectric and solar, demonstrating a commitment to sustainable power for the future.

Were ESB Energy any good?

ESB Energy scored very well with customers on the various review sites. Customers seemed to be impressed by the service and ease of switching.

However, they seemed to be a supplier making good decisions. Although their rates were not the cheapest, they were competitive and the provisions for electric vehicles and reliance on renewable energy had also proved popular with customers.

Who were ESB Energy?

ESB Energy was an Irish energy provider establishing itself in the energy market in England. They were originally founded in 1927 but had started supplying energy in the UK in 2017. Their head office was based in Manchester.

They offered both gas and electricity services providing 100% renewable electricity. They were also involved in energy generation from wind, thermal and biomass. ESB had electric car charging points in Coventry and London and offered a special tariff for electric vehicle owners.

They were aiming to be the energy supplier that is ‘most easy to deal with’, promising good customer service and simple, clear cut tariffs.

What were ESB's goals?

ESB were also keen to promote their green credentials, investing in around 20 windfarms and nine hydroelectric stations across Britain and Ireland. Their goal was to offer continued competitive energy solutions. Customers in Ireland may already be familiar with ESB. It had been the main electricity supplier in the country for more than 90 years but moved into the British market in 2017 promising to deliver great value, responsible energy. They had a range of renewable energy tariffs, including tariffs for electric vehicles. All tariffs offered 100% renewable energy from solar and wind production although they had not disclosed the exact break down of their fuel mix. Their rates were a little higher than the UK average although costs did vary according to where you would live in the UK and your usage.

What made ESB Energy different?

ESB offered a clear and simple range of tariffs using 100% renewable energy. They aimed to make things simple for the customers, providing great service and good communication. On the whole they seemed to be doing this well, with positive reviews on sites such as Trustpilot. The fact they were investing in green energy production such as wind and hydroelectric also boded well.

How green was ESB Energy?

Apart from their standard variable rate, all ESB Energy tariffs were 100% renewable and carbon neutral. The majority of their power came from wind and solar farms, although the exact break down of this was not known. They were committed to green energy, investing in sustainable production such as wind and hydroelectric plants across the UK.

Did ESB Energy have smart meters?

ESB Energy supplied smart meters, using exclusively the second-generation SMETS 2 variants. These used a DCC network, which means that even if you change energy suppliers in the future, your smart meter will remain fully operational.

ESB Energy: what other services did they offer

ESB had a special EV tariff for customers who had electric vehicles. Electric vehicle owners tend to use more electricity if they charge their cars at home so having a special tariff can help to reduce the cost.

Did ESB Energy do business energy tariffs?

They offered no business tariffs.

ESB Energy reviews

So, what did their customers say about their services?

ESB Energy had more than 2,000 reviews with a very good average star rating on review site Trustpilot. Positive reviews praised the ease of switching and excellent customer service.

The few negative reviews focused on billing errors and a lack of communication from customer service staff. ESB responded to negative reviews on Trustpilot and attempted to seek resolution, usually within 24 hours, which is always a good sign.

How many customers did ESB Energy have?

ESB had around 2.4 million clients in total. Of these about 1.4 million were on the island of Ireland and one million in Great Britain.

HUB Energy gone bust, client base transferred to E.ON Next: what’s next for customers in 2022?

What should HUB Energy customers do at this time?

If you're worried about doing things wrong, don't worry: almost everything is being taken care of for you, and there really isn't anything to be done on your end. The main idea for customers is to sit tight while they wait for the transfer over to E.ON Next, their new supplier, to take effect. This means waiting to be contacted by this new supplier or their administrators.

What happened to HUB Energy?

On the 9th of August 2021, HUB Energy was officially declared the third supplier to go bust as a result of the ongoing gas price crisis. This fall was followed by a number of other suppliers ceasing their trading in the energy market over the following months of 2021.

This series of disappearances is due to wholesale gas prices rising (by 250% overall in 2021), making it impossible for some suppliers to keep up, considering there is also a price cap being maintained at the same time.

The rise in gas prices is linked to an umber of factors including the reopening of activities and businesses, therefore increasing the demand for gas at a time when supplies are too low to keep up.

Will my supply be interrupted?

No - and this is why you have been assigned a new supplier so quickly and without having any say in the matter. In terms of your gas and electricity appliances functioning, you won't notice any differences compared to when HUB Energy was still your supplier. So if this is what you were worried about, you can rest easy.

Should I continue to pay HUB Energy with my usual payment methods?

Don't make any changes to the payment system you'd set up with HUB Energy to pay your bills. Until E.ON Next contacts you to work out the details in terms of debt, credit, tariffs and methods of payment, leave everything as i s, whether you paid them through direct debit, direct payment, or standing order.

Should I take a meter reading?

Yes - taking a meter reading will give you information that will then help you get things done correctly and efficiently when E.ON Next contacts you. If you're planning on switching suppliers after that, having a recent meter reading will help you make the switch more swiftly too.

If you own a smart meter and are worried that your new supplier doesn't support these automatic meters, not to worry - E.ON Next is adapted to, and distributed, smart meters. You will therefore be able to continue using the smart features of this measurement tool.

What if had credit or debt with HUB Energy?

If you had credit with HUB Energy, here are some good news for you: this credit will be honoured by your replacement supplier, E.ON Next. They have pledged to follow through with any past or current HUB Energy customers' credit. This means that if you used to be a HUB Energy customer, then switched before they went bust but never received credit they still owed you, E.ON Next will be settling their debt for them.

If you yourself have debt owed to HUB Energy, the information at this time is more vague, but what's certain is that E.ON Next will inform you on how to proceed for the payment.

E.ON Next to take over: will my bills go up?

We can't give you a definitive answer to this question: depending on thetariff and rate you used to have with HUB Energy, the "deemed" tariff that E.ON Next will set you up with may or may not imply higher bills for you. This "deemed" tariff you will be assigned is likely to be one of E.ON Energy's more standard energy plans, so you can assume, if your HUB Energy deal was on the cheaper side, that you'll be paying more with this tariff.

However, remember that once you've been contacted by E.ON Energy and are officially transferred over to their client base, you will be free to shop around for other deals. It will also be possible, of course, to switch to another supplier at that point. So don't worry too much about this deemed tariff - you'll receive specific details about it in due time.

Who chose E.ON Next to replace HUB Energy?

In the context of this gas price crisis, Ofgem (the Office of Gas and Electricity Markets) has been charge with determining which suppliers are willing and fit to take on the customers whose suppliers have gone bust. E.ON Next will have been chosen on the basis of its ability to survive the crisis as well as supply a certain amount of consumers with energy.

How will I be contacted by E.ON Next, and when?

If you've followed what we've explained so far, you will have understood that the key point to wait for here is the moment when E.ON Next will contact you. Indeed, this is when you will be able to look for other deals, set up a new payment method, sort out credit and debt , etc.

E.ON Next has to contact a total of 15 000 new customers - understandably, this will take time, and it will likely be going through the customer base in waves. Our advice is to be patient, and to check that your current address is correctly and officially stated, since this is how E.ON Next will be seeking to contact you. This is particularly relevant for anyone who has recently moved home or is in the process of doing so.

Can I switch to another supplier now?

Again, like most other things in this context, the only condition for being able to switch suppliers is whether or not E.ON Next has contacted you yet. Once i t has, then yes, you are absolutely free to look for another supplier, with deals which fit you better for instance. However, this is not something you should be thinking about at this time if you are still what could be called "in between suppliers".

What if I have already started switching suppliers?

If you'd initiated the process of switching suppliers from HUB Energy to another firm, then the switch will go through as planned as long as you had requested it properly.

E.ON Next tariffs in 2021

Like the majority of suppliers, E.ON Next offers the following categories of tariffs : variable rate tariffs, fixed rate tariffs, prepayment deals, and Economy 7 tariffs. It also adds another, less widespread type of tariff, called Economy 10. If you are planning to switch from your "deemed "tariff once E.ON Next has contacted you, but are hesitant to switch suppliers altogether, being familiar with these options can be useful. Here they are by category:

E.ON Next's variable rate tariffs

Variable rate tariffs are energy deals under which a customer's monthly bills depend on the variations of the market price of energy. This means that you may sometimes be billed less, and sometimes more - a more risky model, but that can help you save money in certain conditions.

Plan Tariff type Type of fuel Standing charge (p/day) Unit rate cost (p/kWh) Average total annual cost (£/year) Exit cost (£/fuel)
Next Flex - Standard Energy Plan Variable Rate Electricity 29.480 p* 22.310 p* £ 754.666** £ 0.000

** Based on 2,900.00 kWh of ⚡ and 12,000.00 kWh of 🔥 per year on average
Including 5% of VAT.
Exit fees are £0.

E.ON Next's fixed rate tariffs

Fixed rate tariffs give you much more stability and visibility on your bills: they can be considered the opposite of a variable rate tariff, as they offer the same rates no matter the context. However, a fixed rate contrat typically only stays fixed for a certain period of time, usually 12 or 24 months, as seen below:

What made HUB Energy different?

At Papernest, we understand that every energy supplier has something unique to offer. HUB Energy was part of the Gulf group of companies, which have a 100 year track record within the oil and power industry. It was launched with a clear focus not just on renewables, but on customer service.

As their website stated, "We think it’s about time energy suppliers start listening to their customers. We believe energy should work with the way customers live their lives. Great value products, first-class service, renewable electricity as standard, carbon off-set gas and online tools which just work brilliantly".

Did the brand’s performance live up to this claim?

Who were HUB Energy?

HUB Energy were a 100% renewable energy supplier based in Preston, Central Lancashire. Formerly known as Gulf Gas & Power, the company rebranded in 2021 with a renewed focus on delivering affordable, renewable energy.

Who owned HUB Energy?

HUB Energy was owned by the international oil giant Gulf. Gulf, in turn, is owned by The Bayford Group.

Were HUB Energy any good?

Let’s be honest, we all want to know if HUB Energy were any good. So, we’re not going to bury the lede.

HUB combined affordable, renewable energy with great customer service. While some customers may have thought twice given the brand’s oil pedigree, the brand did seem to have a strong focus on making a difference to their energy. Looking at customer sentiment, it seems that HUB Energy’s customers agreed.

Our opinion on HUB Energy

As long as you didn’t mind managing your account online, HUB Energy had the potential to be everything you wanted in a supplier. They offered 100% renewable electricity and carbon-neutral gas at great prices, and had a very good reputation for customer service.

To try and get a better understanding of HUB Energy, let’s look at how they performed in all the areas that matter.

Hub Energy UK

What services were offered?

Lots of energy suppliers, both large and small, offer additional services that complement their energy supply. Did HUB Energy have any additional offerings? Let’s find out...

Did HUB Energy do business tariffs?

Yes. While it may not have been one of the "Big 6" Energy suppliers, HUB Energy was able to offer scalable energy solutions to business customers of all kinds.

Unlike domestic energy supply, however, HUB Energy’s business supply didn’t have fixed tariffs. Instead, energy rates were negotiated individually with customers. There were no dual-fuel plans for business customers. Rates were negotiated separately for each fuel. How much you paid would depend on a number of factors including:

  • Your location
  • How many premises you had
  • How much energy you used
  • Your peak energy load hours

As with its domestic energy provision, HUB’s business energy was 100% renewable and carbon-neutral.

Did HUB Energy have smart meters? What smart meters do they offer?

A smart meter can make it easier to track your energy usage. And because they communicate your usage directly to your supplier, you won’t need to worry about taking monthly meter readings and reporting them to your supplier.

Given that its best-value energy tariff was only available to customers with smart meters, it goes without saying that HUB Energy was keen to make smart meters available to its customers.

Smart meters were offered in conjunction with partner company SMS PLC. HUB Energy was exclusively rolling out second-generation smart meters. This was advantageous, as it meant your smart meter would remain fully functional and continue to report your usage data to your new supplier after you switch in the future.

How to apply for the Warm Home Discount with HUB Energy

Unfortunately, HUB Energy did not offer the Warm Home Discount. This is a government initiative that a flat-rate discount of £140 on their energy bills over the colder months from September to April. You can apply for this if you are of pension age or if you claim qualifying income-based benefits.

However, as one of the cheapest energy companies on the market today, you may have found that switching to HUB Energy still worked out cheaper, even without the Warm Home Discount.

What did their customers say?

At Papernest, we understand that low prices aren’t the only thing that you expect from an energy supplier. You also expect (and deserve) outstanding customer service.

So, how did HUB Energy’s customers really feel about the brand? We can find out by taking a look at their Trustpilot page. There are, of course, lots of resources out there to help you gauge customer sentiment. However, we like Trustpilot because suppliers actively solicit reviews from customers. This means that you get a better balance of opinion as customers don’t just leave reviews when they have something negative to say.

HUB Energy enjoyed a lot of enthusiasm from customers on the platform. They had an aggregate customer score of 4.4 out of 5, making them an "Excellent" supplier.
HUB Energy had a total of 1,713 customer reviews. Of which:

  • 1,275 (74%) were "Excellent"
  • 273 (16%) were "Great"
  • 58 (3%) were "Average"
  • 27 (2 %) were "Poor"
  • 80 (5%) were "Bad"

90% of reviewers rated HUB Energy as above average, while just 7% consider them below average. Some reviews have been merged from the Gulf Gas & Power page.

Positive reviews praised helpful and friendly customer support staff, ease of switching and good value for money. Ease of navigating the website and fast, decisive issue resolution also featured prominently in positive reviews.
While the negative reviews were fewer in number, they highlighted inaccurate estimated bills and billing issues, difficulties getting through to the customer service team, and communication problems with members of staff who seemed out of their depth.

HUB Energy had responded to 90% of their negative reviews on the platform, responding in 7 days or less.

How green was HUB Energy?

HUB Energy offered 100% renewable energy as well as carbon-offset gas. This carbon is offset by planting trees and funding carbon-neutral energy projects all over the world. This made them one of the greener suppliers operating in the UK.

HUB Energy fuel mix

Although HUB Energy had disclosed that their energy fuel mix was 100% renewable, they had not announced how much of their energy was powered by wind, solar or hydro. They had, however, posted their previous energy mix from 2019-2020 before going 100% renewable.
Their previous energy fuel mix was as follows:

  • 72% natural gas
  • 8.3% renewables
  • 8.2% nuclear
  • 6.3% coal
  • 5.25% other

How to contact

Just how easy was it to get in touch with HUB Energy?

HUB Energy’s domestic accounts were managed on an "online only" basis. This means that they provided you with the digital tools you need to manage your account online through your customer hub.

The fastest way to contact a member of staff was through the live chat function on their website. You could also call them on 0800 830 3670. Alternatively, you could email through the contact page on their website.

HUB Energy: How to pay

The only way you could pay for your HUB Energy tariff was by direct debit. This helped to reduce operational costs and keep your energy affordable.
The Papernest team recommends installing a smart meter or taking regular meter readings in order to ensure that your costs are proportionate to your energy usage.

How to refer a friend to HUB Energy

Unfortunately, HUB Energy did not offer a referral scheme.

How to complain about HUB Energy

If you had a complaint about HUB Energy, the easiest way to submit it was over the phone or via online chat or email. If, however, you preferred sending your complaint in the post, you could sent it to:

HUB Energy
3B Edward VII Quay
Navigation Way
Preston
PR2 2YF

It was strongly recommended to submit your complaint via recorded delivery.

After receiving your complaint, HUB Energy had 8 weeks to resolve matters to your satisfaction. If you felt that they had not done this, you were then able to forward your complaint to the energy ombudsman. While HUB Energy is obviously no longer open for complaints, this system still applies to any other energy supplier.

Zebra Power in 2022: Prices, Reviews and Contact Details

light bulb in sunlight

Who should Zebra Power customers do?

While it may be alarming to hear that your energy supplier has gone bust, there is actually little you need to be concerned about. It's important to know that Ofgem, the UK energy market's government regulator, has a safety net to ensure that no home has its energy supply cut, instead customers of the defaulted supplier will be smoothly transferred to a new supplier in order to maintain the flow of energy. However, it may take some time for this transition to be officially completed, so in the meantime, we want to address any immediate concerns or questions that you might have.

What happened to Zebra Power?

Rather unfortunately Zebra Power is only the most recent supplier to have gone bust during the UK energy crisis. The global gas shortage drove gas prices to an unprecedented level, but because of the energy price cap, suppliers have not been allowed to charge their customers a high enough amount to offset the wholesale costs of energy. The end result is that many suppliers are losing money so rapidly that they are unable to recover, leading to an unprecedented amount of suppliers going bust in such a short period of time.

Should I continue to pay Zebra Power by Direct Debit, Standing Order or direct payment?

This will depend on the state of your debt or credit that is owed to or expected from Zebra Power. It is important to clarify if there are any remaining payment issues before you stop making payments because if you owe money you could be given trouble later on, or if you were owed money there is a chance you could miss out on receiving it. Ofgem recommends that you continue making payments as you normally have until you are officially completed with the transition to the new supplier that it appointed to you.

If you've already cancelled payments then your next supplier will be able to help you set up a new payment process.

Should I take a meter reading?

Yes, you definitely should. While this isn’t an official obligation, we highly recommend that you take a reading on your energy meter and record it just in case you need a situation arises where you need to provide your new supplier with a recent meter reading. This will help your transition to your new supplier and ensure it goes smoothly.

For smart meters, the same idea applies, you should take a reading and not worry about compatibility concerning your newly appointed supplier. If they have to, your new supplier will simply treat your smart meter as a traditional meter when they come over to take their own readings. Remember, you can always switch suppliers later on.

What will happen if I am in credit or debt to Zebra Power?

Most energy suppliers will honour any credit that you have had with your supplier at the time that it went bust. The exact timeline for this payment to be made is not very exact, but once you have been completely transitioned to your new supplier they should be in contact with you shortly to organize this.

In regards to any debts owed to Zebra Power, this may change depending on the new supplier that you have been appointed by Ofgem. In some cases, your debts are transferred to the new supplier and in some cases, you will need to continue paying off your debts to your previous supplier even after they cease trading. You can find out more about this once your new supplier has been announced by Ofgem and you can reach out to them to confirm the process.

What rate will I pay under my new contract?

As mentioned above, there is a good chance it will be a higher rate than you are accustomed to paying. To avoid this we highly recommend you get into contact with your new supplier as soon as you are announced by Ofgem and discuss with them which energy plan you prefer to be on going forward.

On the other hand, it's important to know that you will be able to switch energy suppliers at your own whim at that time, so if you would like to you can give us a call at 0330 818 6225 and we can find you the best energy plan for your needs.

When is my new supplier going to contact me?

This can be a process that takes several weeks so you will need to be patient, but they should be in touch shortly. They may reach out via post or phone so be sure to check that your contact information is up to date. Once the supplier you will be transferred to is announced they should reach out to you shortly afterwards, but if they do not you could reach out to them directly.

How is my new supplier going to contact me if I am moving?

Your new supplier will reach out to you at your current address listed with your previous supplier. What this means is that if you are moving they will reach out to your previous address with some potentially important information, as such it is our recommendation that you have all your mail from your previous address redirected to your new one.

Can I switch suppliers right now?

Although it makes sense for your initial reaction to this news would be to rush into finding a new supplier, that's actually the opposite of what you should do. Switching to a new supplier too quickly could cause some confusion between your old supplier, the supplier that you've been appointed by Ofgem and the new supplier that you've selected for yourself. These issues can range in anything from minor inconveniences to serious problems regarding your home's power supply

Do I have to stay with my appointed supplier?

Not at all, aside from any contracts that you are currently signed on for, you can leave your appointed supplier as soon as the transfer is complete. If you decide to switch immediately your exit fees will typically be waived, so if you don't like the supplier appointed to you it would be a good idea to switch sooner than later.

What makes them different?

Zebra Power markets itself as a different kind of energy suppliers. One that eschews the vagaries that many consumers associate with energy companies, providing clear, transparent and no-nonsense communications with their customers.
Their website (quite rightly) asserts that many energy companies sacrifice customer service in their dash to sign up as many new customers as possible. Zebra Power aims to be an alternative to this mentality, providing exceptional customer service and rewarding loyalty.
As their website states- "We believe that once you’ve become part of the Zebra team your days of continual switching will be over!".
Nice sentiment! But does Zebra Power’s reputation back this up? We’ll find out by getting to know them a little better.

Who were Zebra Power?

Zebra Power was a small, independent supplier based in Manchester. They were set up in 2016 with a clear focus on providing energy consumers with a more customer-focused alternative to the "Big 6" suppliers.

Who owned Zebra Power?

Zebra Power was owned by its co-founder Pete George. Before founding Zebra Energy, George was the Managing Director of Downstream OIS, offering advisory services to downstream companies within the UK and Ireland oil and energy industries.

Was Zebra Power any good?

Zebra Power had consistently affordable energy tariffs and an impressive customer service record. However, their lack of a renewable energy fuel mix may have given some eco-conscious energy consumers some doubts.

Our opinion on Zebra Power

If you were looking for low prices and great customer service, Zebra Power was a great fit for you. However, the supplier had a couple of shortcomings that may have given some energy consumers doubts. Chiefly among these were their lack of renewable credentials and their lack of provision for customers who want smart energy meters.
If you thought Zebra Power might have been the supplier for you, the Papernest team can help you to choose the perfect tariff for your needs. We’ll even manage your switch to bring you cheaper energy quickly and completely hassle-free.
Let’s take a look at Zebra Power’s performance in all the areas that are likely to be important to you as an energy consumer...

zebra-power-review

Tariffs and Prices in 2021

Zebra Power had a wide range of fixed-rate tariffs and a single variable-rate energy plan. You can see details for those below. Zebra Energy offered generous discounts for paperless billing, and you can see the paperless variants for every tariff listed below to give you a clearer idea of how much you could've saved.
Monthly and annual energy costs are based on UK average energy consumption of 12,000 kWh of gas and 2,900 kWh of electricity per year.
All unit rates described below were based on UK averages. Your rates may vary depending on where you live in the UK. All prices are inclusive of VAT at 5%.

Zebra 1 Year Fixed Rate Paperless

This was Zebra Power’s cheapest 12-month fixed-rate tariff and represents excellent value for money. After this tariff expired, however, you would've lapsed to the variable rate tariff by default. Remember, you can call the Papernest team to switch to a new energy plan within 60 days of the contract’s end without incurring the £30 per fuel early exit fee.

Energy Cost Price
Electricity unit rate 15.71p per kWh
Electricity standing charge 21p per day
Gas unit rate 3.088p per kWh
Gas standing charge 21p per day

  • Estimated monthly costs: £81.62
  • Estimated annual costs: £979.45
  • Early exit fee: £30 per fuel

Zebra 24 Months V6 Paperless

This was Zebra Power’s best value 24-month tariff which locked in your unit rates for 2 years for a slightly higher monthly cost. Again, you will lapse to the default variable rate tariff after this expires.

More info

Energy Cost Price
Electricity unit rate 16.187p per kWh
Electricity standing charge 27p per day
Gas unit rate 3.363p per kWh
Gas standing charge 23p per day

  • Estimated monthly costs: £87.96
  • Estimated annual costs: £1,055.48
  • Early exit fee: £30 per fuel

Zebra Born Free Variable Paperless

This was Zebra Power’s standard variable tariff. This was the tariff to which customers will default after their fixed-rate tariffs expire. It was also the best tariff to switch to if you wanted the freedom to change your energy plan whenever you liked.

Energy Cost Price
Electricity unit rate 18.312p per kWh
Electricity standing charge 24.381p per day
Gas unit rate 3.314p per kWh
Gas standing charge 26.6p per day

  • Estimated monthly costs: £92.90
  • Estimated annual costs: £1,114.78
  • Early exit fee: N/A

Was Zebra Power really cheaper?

Zebra Power had a reputation for being one of the best value energy suppliers on the market. Looking at these tariffs, we can see that this reputation was well earned. Even its variable-rate tariff was below the Energy Price Cap.

What other services do they offer?

Many energy companies offer other services in addition to supplying domestic energy. Does Zebra Power offer any of these?
Let’s have a look...

Do Zebra Power do business tariffs?

Zebra Power does not currently offer business energy plans. Its focus is squarely on delivering value to the domestic market.

Do Zebra Power have smart meters? What smart meters do they offer?

Although Zebra Power are willing to take on customers who currently have smart meters, they do not offer smart meters to their customers. What’s more, your smart meter will act as a standard credit meter. As such, you will still need to submit regular meter readings to Zebra Power. You will, however, still have your In-Home Display to make this a little easier and more convenient.

How to apply for the Warm Home Discount with Zebra Power

Unfortunately, Zebra Power does not offer the Warm Home Discount. This is a government initiative that a flat-rate discount of £140 on their energy bills over the colder months from September to April. You can apply for this if you are of pensionable age or claiming income based benefits.
Energy suppliers are only required to offer the Warm Home Discount if they have over 250,000 customers. As a smaller supplier, Zebra Power is not required to provide this discount.
Nonetheless, as one of the cheapest suppliers on the market, you may find that switching to Zebra Power actually works out cheaper, even without the Warm Home Discount.

What do their customers say?

Zebra Power was affordable, but at Papernest, we understand that low prices alone don’t necessarily make for the perfect supplier.
A supplier’s customer service record is very important. And the best way to get a sense of a supplier’s customer service is to see what real customers are saying about them.
There are a few online resources you can use to see how a supplier’s customers really feel about them. However, here we’ll defer to their Trustpilot page. Trustpilot is reliable as suppliers actively solicit reviews from customers. So people don’t only leave reviews when they want to complain (as is often the case).
Customers have certainly been keen to praise Zebra Power on this platform. At the time of writing, they have an aggregate customer score of 4.6 out of 5, making them an "Excellent" supplier.
Zebra Power had a total of 300 customer reviews. Of which:

  • 266 (89%) were "Excellent"
  • 11 (4%) were "Great"
  • 0 (0%) were "Average"
  • 3 (1%) were "Poor"
  • 20 (7%) were "Bad"

93% of reviewers rated Zebra Power as above average.
Positive reviews describe Zebra power as easy to deal with, with friendly and helpful customer service staff. Great value for money and speedy issue resolution are also cited in positive reviews, as is ease of switching.
The handful of negative reviews focused on requesting a downpayment in order to take on a new customer, lack of specific tariffs for electric vehicles, and miscommunications regarding billing.
Zebra Power had responded to 100% of their negative reviews on the platform, responding within two weeks. However, when they feel that a negative review had been ill-founded or just plainly untrue they have not been shy about it.

How green is Zebra Power?

Unfortunately, Zebra Power was not counted among the the UK’s green suppliers. Because they have not disclosed their energy fuel mix on their website, we are unable to ascertain what, if any, green credentials Zebra Power had.

How to contact

At Papernest, we know how important it is to be able to contact your energy supplier in times of need. It’s a cornerstone of good customer service. So, how easy is Zebra Power to get in touch with?
The fastest way to contact the supplier is to call 0161 498 8100. Alternatively, you can email them at enquiries@zebrapower.co.uk.
According to Citizens Advice, Zebra Power’s it takes just 13 seconds for a member of staff to respond. Zebra Power also responds to 99.1% of emails within 2 days.

Zebra Power: How to pay

Zebra Power only accepted payment by direct debit. They advised that you should take monthly meter readings to ensure that your payments accurately reflected your usage.

How to refer a friend to Zebra Power

Unfortunately, Zebra Power did not offer a referral scheme. This is fairly common among smaller suppliers.

How to complain about Zebra Power

If you had a complaint about Zebra Power, there were a number of ways in which you could express it. You can send it via email or even over the phone, using the details above.

However, if you would rather send your complaint in the post, the address to send it to is:
Zebra Power
Floor 9
2 Pinfold St
Sheffield City Centre
Sheffield
S1 2GU

We strongly recommend submitting your complaint via recorded delivery.
Upon receipt of your complaint, Zebra Power has 8 weeks to resolve the issue to your satisfaction. If you don’t feel that they have done this, you may then forward your complaint to the energy ombudsman.

What makes Sainsbury's Energy different?

After breaking with British Gas in 2019, it seemed as though Sainsbury’s Energy was about to be consigned to the pile of failed energy suppliers that have proliferated over the past free years. But a new partnership with PS Energy UK has given a new lease of life to the ailing supplier.
Supplying renewable electricity and natural gas, Sainsbury’s Energy hopes to build a trustworthy brand that rewards its customers. If you already use Sainsbury’s to get your groceries and fuel, you may find that Sainsbury’s Energy is highly advantageous for you. Sign up to a Sainsbury’s Energy plan and you could find yourself thousands of nectar points better off.
Sainsbury’s is one of the most trusted names in supermarket retail, paired with two amalgamated companies that make up 33% of the "Big 6". As such, they are potentially one of the best-known and most reliable names in energy.

Who are Sainsbury's Energy?

Sainsbury's needs no introduction for most in the UK. The supermarket has been looking after UK shoppers since 1869. They got into the energy market in the latter half of the 2010s, first in partnership with British Gas and, as of 2019 in conjunction with N Power / E.On.

Who owns Sainsbury's Energy?

Sainsbury’s Energy is a joint venture between the supermarket giant (who handle the customer-facing aspects of the business) and Powershop Energy, a brand owned by E.On.

Our opinion on Sainsbury's Energy

Sainsbury's Energy offer simple renewable energy plans at (historically) very reasonable rates. However, the company is in a state of flux in light of the E.On Next / PS Energy UK merger and current rates are not clear.
However, you can always count on the Papernest team to find the right supplier and tariff for your household’s unique needs.
Let’s dive a little deeper.

Sainsbury's Energy tariffs & prices in 2021

Sainsbury’s Energy’s tariffs have recently undergone an overhaul. Their previous rates have been replaced with a single, easy to understand fixed energy plan. There are two variants of this.
The Fix & Reward energy plan has both 1 year and 2 year variants. Unfortunately, customers are not currently able to retrieve new quotes, and current unit rates and standing charges have not been disclosed. It’s possible that these will change in the near future. Indeed there is growing indications that Sainbury's energy will now be providing the new set of E.ON Next tariffs that you can find everything about in the guide of our cousin website.
We can, however, look at the most recent annual energy costs by region. Energy costs are based on assumed energy consumption of 12,000 kWh of gas and 3,100 kWh of electricity per year. Prices are inclusive of VAT at 5%.

Sainsbury’s Energy 1 Year Fix and Reward

This is Sainsbury’s Energy’s 12 month fixed-rate tariff. It offers 100% renewable electricity which is available either on its own or as a dual fuel tariff. It comes with an early exit fee of £30 per fuel. Customers who choose this tariff get an additional 2,000 Nectar points per fuel. Sainsbury’s customers also get double points for single fuel and triple points for dual fuel in store up to a value of 3,500 points per fuel per annum. This is an online-only tariff.
In the table below, you can find the most up to date average annual energy costs per region for single and dual fuels.

Sainsbury’s Energy 2 Year Fix and Reward

This is Sainsbury’s Energy’s 2 year fixed-rate energy plan. Again, it offers 100% renewable electricity on its own, as well as dual fuel energy. Sign up to this tariff and you get 4,000 extra Nectar Points. This tariff comes with an early exit fee of £30 per fuel.

Is Sainsbury's Energy really cheaper?

On average, Sainsbury’s Energy tariffs do seem cheaper than most, although unit rates may change in the near future. Rates are currently comfortably below the Ofgem Energy Price Cap which has been increased to pre-COVID levels at £1,138 for both fuels.
However, in the case of both tariffs, when the fixed-rates expire you will be moved onto a standard default tariff. And this may be significantly more expensive. You can contact the Papernest team within 60 days of your tariff’s expiry. We can find you a cheaper new energy plan within this timeframe, without incurring any early exit fees.

Sainsbury's Energy: What other services do they offer?

Sainsbury's Energy has a few other services available to its energy customers. Let’s take a closer look at these here.

Can I get extra Nectar Points with Sainsbury’s Energy?

Absolutely! As well as picking up 2,000 bonus nectar points when you sign up to a 1 year fixed plan and 4,000 extra nectar points when you sign up for 2 years, you can also get more nectar points when you spend money in any Sainsbury’s store.
Single fuel customers get double points while dual fuel customers get triple points.

Do Sainsbury's Energy do business tariffs?

Unfortunately, Sainsbury’s Energy do not offer business energy plans. They are focused singularly on domestic energy.

Do Sainsbury's Energy have smart meters? What smart meters do they offer?

Yes, since they are in partnership with two of the biggest names in UK energy, Sainsbury’s Energy are well placed to offer smart meters. Installations are still going ahead under what remains of the national lockdown.
At present, Sainsbury’s Energy exclusively offers second-generation SMETS2 meters. These are advantageous as they remain fully functional no matter how many times you switch energy suppliers.

How to apply for the Warm Home Discount with Sainsbury's Energy

Energy suppliers with over 250,000 customers are required by law to provide the Warm Home Discount. This gives a flat discount of £140 on the cost of energy through the colder months from September to March for elderly and financially vulnerable energy consumers.
Because it is paired with E.On / N Power, Sainsbury’s Energy does offer the Warm Home Discount. If you’re of pension age (Core Group) you don’t need to do anything. Sainsbury’s Energy will contact you in the summer when applications are open. If you are in receipt of income-related benefits (broader group), you will be able to apply via Sainsbury’s website in summer.

Sainsbury's Energy customer reviews: What do their customers say?

At papernest, we’ll always match the right energy supplier and plan to your unique needs and priorities. As such, we recognise that there’s more to a supplier than their prices. You also want to know that they offer the kind of customer service you expect.
What better way to evaluate this than by seeing what Sainsbury’s Energy’s customers say about the brand?
To do this, we can look at Sainsbury's Energy’s Trustpilot page. This gives a good overview of how customers feel, as well as in-depth qualitative data from customer reviews.
At the time of writing, Sainsbury's Energy has an overall customer score of 3.9 out of 5. This makes them a "Great" supplier, on the verge of "Excellent".
At present, Sainsbury's Energy has a fairly modest 264 customer reviews. Of which:

  • 114 (43%) were "Excellent"
  • 19 (7%) were "Great"
  • 8 (3%) were "Average"
  • 11 (4%) were "Poor"
  • 112 (42%) were "Bad"

As we can see, 50% of customers currently believe that Sainsbury’s Energy customers believe the brand to be above average. However, the number of reviewers rating the brand as "Excellent" and "Bad" is almost equal.
Positive reviews highlight excellent customer service, and speedy transfer of nectar points. Customers also laud the company for ease of switching, and fast issue resolution.
Less flattering comments cite difficulty managing accounts online, issues getting in touch with the customer service team, and cancelled / suspended contracts during the merger with E.On.

How green is Sainsbury's Energy?

Sainsbury's Energy offers 100% renewable electricity on all its new tariffs. However, it does not currently offer green biomethane gas or carbon-offset natural gas. Find out more and compare green energy suppliers here.

Its full energy fuel mix is as follows:

  • 54.4% Natural gas

What makes them so different?

Many business energy customers gravitate towards the "Big 6" energy suppliers. They do this because they believe that only these energy titans have the capability to handle their energy needs at scale. However, while Pozitive Energy might not be as well-known as British Gas or E.On, they are capable of managing all kinds of business energy accounts, from small businesses and microbusinesses to enterprise-level operations run across multiple sites.

Pozitive Energy describes itself as an energy supplier and tech company all in one, promising a host of highly sophisticated analytics tools that help business customers to better track their energy usage across multiple sites with its own in-house monitoring software and mobile apps. So business customers can stay in the loop wherever they are. Energy plans are completely bespoke and built around your company’s unique needs.

Unlike many of the larger suppliers, Pozitive Energy also offers both 100% renewable energy and carbon-neutral gas at competitive prices. So your business can be proud of its green credentials (something that’s likely to be important to your customers).

  • Education
  • Retail
  • Logistics
  • Petroleum
  • Hospitality
  • Government / public sector

Who owns Pozitive Energy?

Pozitive Energy is a Private Limited Company. Its CEO is Neeraj Bhatia. Its corporate structure is somewhat unclear. However, we do know that they offer 100% renewable energy and carbon-offset gas in partnership with Shell Energy.

Are Pozitive Energy any good?

As we can see, there’s a lot to recommend Pozitive Energy. With bespoke and scalable business energy solutions, green energy, carbon-offset gas, and a strong focus on ethics, innovation and customer service, they seem to be everything you could want in a business energy provider.

But does their performance match the values outlined in their website?

Let’s dive a little deeper, and see how they measure up in all the ways that matter to you.

Tariffs & prices

When evaluating Pozitive Energy’s tariffs, it’s unfortunately not possible to provide specific information on the brand’s unit rates and standing charges.

This is because, like most business energy suppliers, they do not offer the same kind of fixed tariffs that we’re used to seeing from domestic energy suppliers. Business energy use can be extremely varied, which is why Pozitive Energy offers completely bespoke plans built around each customer’s unique needs.

That said, Pozitive Energy does provide information on its variable / deemed tariff. This is the tariff that customers will automatically lapse into when their foxed-rate energy contract expires, or you move into a business premises that is supplied by Pozitive Energy. Keep in mind, however, that deemed tariffs are rarely the most competitive a supplier offers, and your company’s proposed rates may be significantly different.

Standing Charge (pence per day) Day Rate (p per kWh) Night Rate (p per kWh) Evening & Weekend Rate (p per kWh)
Single Electricity 75 21 N/A N/A
Day & Night Electricity 75 21 17 N/A
Day & Eve/WE Electricity 75 21 N/A 19
Day, Night & Eve/WE Electricity 75 21 17 19
Gas 75 4 N/A N/A

How much you pay on your bespoke business energy tariff will depend on a number of factors including:

  • Your location.
  • How much energy you use.
  • How many sites you have (they have special multi-site deals).
  • Your peak energy load hours.

Although Pozitive Energy offers both gas and electricity, business tariffs do not include the same dual fuel rates and discounts that are found in domestic energy deals. Rates for gas and electricity are negotiated separately.

Is Pozitive Energy really cheaper?

Pozitive Energy offers competitively-priced energy plans that are built around your needs. But are they cheaper than their larger competitors?

Potentially, yes.

The real value-added is Pozitive Energy’s digital toolkits that enable energy users to take control of their energy spend and gain insights into how and when they may be spending more than they should on energy.

What other services do they offer?

What makes Pozitive Energy a somewhat unique offering is their emphasis on tech solutions to help their business energy customers to improve their understanding of how much energy they’re using, when they’re using it, and how energy-saving measures can be tracked.

This is arguably the brand’s USP. But are there any other services they offer that might be of use to customers? Let’s take a look...

Do Pozitive Energy only do business tariffs?

Yes. Unlike the "Big 6" suppliers, Pozitive Energy exclusively offers business energy, with services built around the needs of the commercial / industrial markets. It seems unlikely that they will ever offer domestic energy solutions.

Do Pozitive Energy have smart meters? What smart meters do they offer?

Pozitive Energy’s focus is on helping customers to take control of their energy usage. As such, they offer Automated Meter Read (AMR) meters which are set up within 6 weeks of your signing up to their service. So you’ll never need to worry about cash flow problems caused by inaccurate bills.

AMR meters are very similar in function to domestic smart meters. The only difference is that they communicate to the supplier in a slightly different way. The use of an AMR meter is essential in helping customers to take advantage of the custom analytics provided by Pozitive Energy’s digital tools.

The benefits of AMR meters include:

  • Regular, accurate meter reads reducing the cash flow issues caused by estimated bills.
  • No need for the inconvenience of onsite meter reads.
  • Helps to reduce business energy consumption and carbon emissions.

.

What do their customers say?

The Papernest team understand the importance of listening to the opinions of energy consumers. And this is as true for business energy companies as it is for domestic suppliers.

Which is why we always like to look at the opinions of a supplier’s customers to help you make an informed decision.

As is often the case with business energy suppliers, reviews for Pozitive Energy are more sparse than we usually see for most domestic suppliers.

Looking at Pozitive Energy’s Trustpilot page we can see that customer sentiment is generally positive with over 60% of customers rating the brand as above average.

At the time of writing, Pozitive Energy has an overall customer score of 3.7 out of 5 which puts them at the upper end of "Average", verging on "Great".

Pozitive Energy currently has 155 customer reviews. Of these:

  • 89 (57%) were "Excellent"
  • 8 (5%) were "Great"
  • 3 (2%) were "Average"
  • 0 (0%) were "Poor"
  • 55 (35%) were "Bad"

Let’s take a closer look at the good and the bad of what Pozitive Energy’s business customers say about their energy, their prices and their service.

The Good

Positive reviews for the brand were focused on interactions with helpful and knowledgeable employees who had gone the extra mile to help them feel supported and resolve issues promptly.

Multiple reviewers refer to individual customer service agents. Something that we find usually indicates that a team member has gone the extra mile and that their efforts deserve to be recognised.

The Bad

Like all energy suppliers, there are times when Pozitive Energy’s customers were less than impressed with the standard of service that they received.

Negative reviews cite billing errors and inaccuracies, issues with AMR meters and installations, incorrect invoices and poor communications. Some also state that issue resolution was slower than they would expect from the brand.

How green is Pozitive Energy?

Pozitive Energy is one of the greenest energy suppliers for businesses on the market. Which is a good thing for businesses with a strong sense of Corporate Social Responsibility. Being able to say that your business is 100% renewably powered can demonstrate your environmental and ethical credentials to your clientele.

Pozitive Energy offers 100% renewable electricity from wind, hydropower and solar. What’s more, they offer carbon-offset natural gas. This means that the carbon generated when sourcing the gas is offset by carbon-neutral projects at home and overseas.

Pozitive Energy energy fuel mix

Although Pozitive Energy has disclosed that it uses 100% renewable energy, it does not disclose how much of this is made up of wind, solar or hydropower.

How to contact

Our opinion on Pozitive Energy

Pozitive Energy may not be the biggest name on the market. But their commitment to renewability, innovation and customer care are very admirable.

Although we can’t help you switch business energy suppliers, the Papernest team are more than happy to help you save money on your domestic energy plan. Indeed, the average household can save around £300 per year by switching with us regularly.

Call us today on 0330 818 6225 to see how much we can help you save.

We’re available from 8am to 6pm.

What should Zog Energy customers do now?

Zog Energy announced that they have ceased trading in the beginning of December due to the energy market crisis. Ofgem has appointed EDF to take on Zog's 11 700 customers. If you are a customer of Zog Energy, this article will provide you with useful information on what's next!

What happened to Zog Energy?

The record high wholesale gas prices have made many energy suppliers in the UK to go out of business. Smaller energy providers have been more affected by the energy market crisis, and Zog Energy was the one to follow their path.

Will my energy supply be interrupted?

No, your household will still be supplied with energy and you will not feel any difference in your supply! The energy watchdog Ofgem has the responsibility to ensure that all customers will not feel any disruptions and inconvenience, and make sure that the transfer to EDF is performed smoothly.

Should I still be paying my bills to Zog Energy?

Depending on your personal situation, you might still owe money to Zog Energy. Therefore, you should not cancel your contract or make any changes to your payment agreement. Wait until your new supplier, EDF, contacts you. They will inform you how to proceed in this situation and give you instructions to follow.

Should I take a meter reading?

While you are waiting for EDF to call you, you should take a meter reading for future reference. This will be useful when setting up your new account with EDF.
It is also important do to it because you can use the meter reading to check if you have been charged the right amount for your energy use or you have overpaid for your energy bill. The meter reading will be a proof of your real energy consumption.

What happens if I am in debt or credit to Zog Energy?

If you are still in debt or in credit to Zog Energy, your situation depends on their agreement with EDF. The two suppliers will decide who will take care of these payments. When EDF contacts you about your new contract with them they will give you instructions about this matter. This process might take a few weeks, so just sit and wait for their call!

EDF to take over: will my bills go up?

When your supplier goes bust, you will be put on a deemed contract with the new supplier chosen by Ofgem. In such a situation, you are not able to chose your tariff and you are automatically assigned under a deemed tariff. This contract tends to be a big more expensive and in some cases could be higher than your old one.

What rate will I pay under my new EDF contract?

When your new supplier is chosen, you will start to pay the tariff of the deemed contract you have been put on with EDF. The rates should be communicated to you by EDF or their administrator.

We would recommend that you ask EDF to put you on their cheapest contract to minimise the costs and once the transfer is completed you can shop around and look for better tariffs or another energy supplier that meets your budget and needs.

Who chose EDF to be my new supplier?

The UK's energy watchdog Ofgem (the Office of Gas and Electricity Markets) takes care of assigning customers of failed suppliers to more stable energy providers. They have chosen EDF to take on Zog Energy's customers and the change came info force on the 4th of December. Ofgem chooses the new supplier based on their ability to take on all customers of the failed supplier and be able to provide energy at least for a temporary period.

When and how will I be contacted by EDF?

It is not clear now long in could take until the new supplier contacts you with instructions. Usually, the suppliers aim to make the transfer as fast as possible, but depending on the amount of customers that are being moved, it can take a little longer. The new supplier will have access to the contact details and address that you have provided, therefore you should make sure that your personal information is up to date!

Can I switch suppliers right now?

You should not switch your supplier before your transfer to EDF has been completed. Once you are officially moved to EDF, you can shop around and look for a new supplier of your choice.

Do I have to remain on contract with EDF?

No, you do not need to stay on contract with EDF. However, you cannot directly switch to a new supplier after Zog Energy has gone bust. Wait until you are moved to EDF and then start the process of switching to the supplier of your choice. Furthermore, it is best to wait for EDF to contact you and sort out the remaining credits or debts you might have.

However, if you were in the process of switching from Zog Energy to another supplier before it went bust, your credit balance will remain intact and the switch should go as planned.

EDF tariffs in 2021: what can I choose from?

While, as we have said, you will be free to switch to another supplier once EDF has contacted you, you are also free to browse EDF's offers first. We suggest you take a look at them below.

The annual average costs of EDF's main tariffs

As an overview, here are the annual costs of EDF's gas and electricity plans, to give you a general idea of what an energy deal really looks like with them:

Plan Tariff type Average electricity annual cost (£/year) Average gas annual cost (£/year) Average total annual cost (£/year)

EDF's variable rate tariff

Variable tariffs imply that the price you pay depends on the current market prices, rising and falling with it proportionately. This allows you to take advantage of any decreases in price, but also makes it more difficult to predict what your monthly energy costs will be.

EDF does offer a variable tariff, but only one. Here it is, both for gas and for electricity:

Plan Tariff type Type of fuel Standing charge (p/day) Unit rate cost (p/kWh) Average total annual cost (£/year) Exit cost (£/fuel)
Standard Variable Variable Rate Electricity 27.400 p* 20.840 p* £ 699.763** £ 0.000
Standard Variable Variable Rate Gas 26.120 p* 4.010 p* £ 576.603** £ 0.000

** Based on 2,900.00 kWh of ⚡ and 12,000.00 kWh of 🔥 per year on average
Including 5% of VAT.
Exit fees are £0.

EDF's fixed rate tariffs

What about fixed rate tariffs? These follow the opposite principle, meaning that monthly fees are always the same no matter what. The fixed nature of the rates usually lasts 12, 24 or 36 months. Here are EDF's fixed rate deals:

Plan Tariff type Type of fuel Standing charge (p/day) Unit rate cost (p/kWh) Average total annual cost (£/year) Exit cost (£/fuel)
Easy Online 12 Month Fixed Rate Electricity 19.950 p* 18.450 p* £ 607.917** £ 15.000

EDF's prepayment tariffs

EDF offers several prepayment tariffs. These energy plans allow you to set the amount you'll be paying, for a specific amount of energy. This makes it easier to keep a strict budget.

Plan Tariff type Type of fuel Standing charge (p/day) Unit rate cost (p/kWh) Average total annual cost (£/year) Exit cost (£/fuel)

EDF's Economy 7 tariffs

Economy 7 tariffs give the customer two different rates, the day rate and the night rate, which correspond to an on-peak and off-peak time period respectively. This means that if you are flexible with your energy consumption habits, you can take advantage of the E7 system and pay the majority of your energy consumption at the lower rate. Here are EDF's E7 rates:

Plan Tariff Type Average Electricity Standing Charge (p/day)* Day Rate (p/kWh)* Night Rate (p/kWh)p* Average total annual cost (£/year)** Exit Fee (£)

What made them different?

Apart from the extraterrestrial connotations of their name Zog Energy were atypical in a number of ways. They were one of only a handful of gas-only suppliers in the UK, and offer a no-frills approach to gas supply.
Even the brand’s website lacks the panache, bells and whistles that we usually expect from energy suppliers, and there’s something quite refreshing about the unassuming simplicity of Zog Energy’s website. That said, it’s easy to navigate and packed with information. Something that can’t be said for many suppliers that put flashy graphics and marketing speak at the forefront of their online presence.
They have an uncommonly good customer service record, as well as a comprehensive range of gas-only tariffs at market-leading prices.

Who were Zog Energy?

Zog Energy is a domestic energy supplier founded by two double Queen’s Award winning entrepreneurs who are dedicated to simplifying the energy market.
But that’s what they all say, right?

However, Zog Energy put its money where its mouth is with transparent pricing, and a strong focus on customer service, simple gas tariffs and the best possible value for money.
Zog’s founders, Andrew Cleveland and Tony Chester, come from the tech world. Their in-depth knowledge of cloud computing and CRM systems allows them to make their operations optimally efficient while reducing operational costs. So they can pass their overheads on savings on to their customers.

Why did Zog Energy only supply gas?

Zog’s USP was its emphasis on simplicity. It had chosen to start with gas because this represents most of the average domestic customers' annual fuel bill. We typically use around 12,000 kWh of gas compared to just 2,900 kWh of electricity.

Zog aimed to help energy consumers who are disillusioned with the "Big 6" suppliers to save money by offering the most competitive prices possible, and making the switching process as easy as possible.

Who owned Zog Energy?

Zog was founded by Andrew Cleveland and Tony Chester. The pair are double Queen's Award winning entrepreneurs who are dedicated to making the energy market simpler and more affordable. They leverage their experience in the digital sphere to drive down operational costs, thereby driving down customers’ bills.

Are Zog Energy any good?

This is the ultimate question that every energy consumer needs to find an answer to. And while "good" is pretty objective in the world of energy (we’re all looking for something different in our energy suppliers), there’s much to recommend Zog Energy.
Let’s start with what every energy consumer wants to know more about… the brand’s prices.

Our opinion on Zog Energy

As a small gas-only supplier, Zog Energy may be outside many energy consumers’ comfort zones. Especially if they are accustomed only to the "Big 6". However, with a great reputation for customer service, a good range of tariffs and eminently reasonable rates, there is a lot to recommend them.
If you think Zog Energy might be the gas supplier for you, The Papernest team can help you find the perfect tariff for your household. We’ll also manage your switch from end-to-end to help you get cheaper gas quickly and 100% hassle-free.

Tariffs & prices

Zog Energy is a gas-only supplier. You will need to get your electricity elsewhere, unless, of course, you generate enough off-grid energy via solar panels, wind turbines or micro hydropower systems to power your home. Keep in mind that getting your gas and electricity from separate suppliers may still work out cheaper than opting for a dual-fuel tariff.
They offer a combination of fixed and variable energy tariffs. There are two kinds of 12 month fixed tariffs, and two kinds of 24 month fixed tariffs.

The Mercury fixed-rate tariffs carry a £30 early exit fee, however the Saturn fixed-rate tariffs do not. Remember, you can call the Papernest team and switch to a new energy plan within 60 days of your contract’s ended date without incurring any early exit fees.

The costs below are based on UK national average unit rates per Kilowatt Hour (kWh). The costs below assume average consumption of 12,000 kWh of gas per year.

Zog Saturn v8 24 Month FIXED term £479.44 £39.95 21 p 3.3566 p

Is Zog Energy really cheaper?

We’ve been conditioned to believe that dual-fuel energy tariffs are always the cheapest way to go. And while many suppliers do offer a discount to customers who choose dual-fuel deals, this isn’t always the best deal.

Zog Energy have some of the best unit rates on the market at the moment, so it could be beneficial to have your gas and electricity with separate suppliers.

What other services do they offer?

Zog Energy’s selling point is its simplicity. As such, those looking for additional services like boiler cover, business energy rates or other additional services may be disappointed.

Do Zog Energy do business tariffs?

No. At the time of writing, Zog Energy is focused exclusively on the domestic energy market. However, that may change as the brand grows and branches out into supplying electricity as well as gas.

Do Zog Energy have smart meters? What smart meters do they offer?

Zog Energy began rolling out smart meters across different regions in 2020. However, they do not yet have full national coverage. The best way to find out if Zog Energy is currently offering smart meters in your area is to email hello@zogenergy.com.

A smart meter and In Home Display can help you to better track your gas consumption in real-time and see the effects of energy saving measures you implement as you make them. Not to mention ensuring that your direct debits are always accurate.

Zog Energy has not yet disclosed which kinds of smart meters it is rolling out. However, since it only began to install smart meters in 2020, it’s safe to assume that these will be second-generation SMETS2 smart meters. These are better than their first-generation counterparts as they will continue to transmit your usage data to your supplier even if you switch away from Zog Energy.

How to apply for the Warm Home Discount with Zog Energy

Unfortunately, as a smaller energy supplier Zog Energy does not currently offer the Warm Home Discount. This provides a flat £140 discount on the cost of energy through the colder months from September to March for elderly and low-income energy consumers.

Only energy suppliers with over 250,000 customers are required by law to provide the Warm Home Discount, and while some offer this on a voluntary basis, Zog Energy is not one of these.

However, Zog Energy may still be a cheaper option for your household, even without this discount.

What do their customers say?

At Papernest, we understand that there’s often a huge discrepancy between the bold claims that suppliers make on their websites and the lived experiences of real customers.

Zog Energy’s website is thankfully light on marketing bluster. But how do their customer really feel about them?

We can take a look at Zog Energy’s Trustpilot page to get an overview of customer sentiment.

Zog Energy currently has an overall customer score of 4.7 out of 5. This makes them an "Excellent" supplier, and among the highest-performing energy companies on the platform.

At the time of writing, Zog Energy has a fairly modest 211 customer reviews. Of which:

  • 187 (89%) were "Excellent"
  • 7 (3%) were "Great"
  • 4 (2%) was "Average"
  • 3 (1%) were "Poor"
  • 10 (5%) were "Bad"

As we can see, over 90% of customers found the brand to be above-average.

Positive reviews cite a high standard of customer service and consistently good value for money. One reviewer mentions having been with them for several years, consistently finding them to offer the best deals on gas year after year. Billing accuracy and clarity were also praised. One glowing review was not without a sense of humour, stating that "As a Norwich City supporter, I have to gloss over the fact Zog are based in Ipswich. The thought that there is a well organised team in Ipswich is hard to accept".

There were, however, still a handful of negative reviews on the platform. One cites "lazy" customer service and difficulty switching because they did not know their MPRN number. Another cites long waits getting credit refunded, while some also mention slow issue resolution that causes frustration.

How green is Zog Energy?

Zog Energy does not offer electricity. As such, it doesn’t have an energy fuel mix. It uses a combination of gas sourced off UK shores as well as imports from all over the world including Norway and the Middle East.

It uses 100% natural gas. Unfortunately, it has no carbon-offset gas or carbon-neutral biomethane gas.

How to contact

At Papernest, we know how frustrating it can be when your energy supplier isn’t available when you need their help and support. Being able to contact your supplier when you need them is a core tenet of customer service.

So, how easy is it to get in touch with Zog Energy?

How green is E Energy?

E Energy’s main selling points are low prices and a simple, straightforward approach. The company doesn’t make any claims to be environmentally friendly on its website and its fuel mix reflects this.

The majority of E Energy’s electricity is generated by natural gas. This is a fossil fuel that’s extracted from deposits laid down millions of years ago beneath the Earth’s crust. These deposits are finite and will eventually run out. Extracting and burning fossil fuel to produce electricity also creates a lot of harmful emissions, something that’s bad news for the environment.

E Energy fuel mix

An energy company’s fuel mix shows where it gets its electricity from. If you want to reduce your carbon footprint and your impact on the environment, choosing a company with a fuel mix made up largely of renewables will help.
The table below shows the E Energy fuel mix:

Fuel E Energy UK average
Coal 6.30% 3.90%
Natural Gas 72.00% 39.40%
Nuclear 8.20% 16.60%
Renewables 8.30% 37.90%
Other 5.20% 2.20%

As you can see from the table, E Energy is not a particularly green gas and electricity company. It uses far less electricity from renewable sources than most other UK energy companies and uses more fossil fuels. If sustainability is important to you and your household, E Energy may not be the right supplier for your home.

E Energy reviews

Looking at an energy company’s reviews is a good way to find out more about them, their customer care and the service they offer. If possible, always take a look at impartial online reviews before making a switch.

Recent online reviews for E Energy include:

"I love E. They provide the best prices for Smart Meters and zero standing charges which is important to me. Customer service is always exemplary too."

And

"Would definitely recommend E energy. I had an issue with my smart meters and in home display not working properly I contacted customer services and they were very helpful and understanding. And they did not stop until my issue was completely resolved and I was happy with the outcome."

What makes E Energy different?

Unlike most UK energy suppliers, E Energy focuses on prepayment tariffs. This means that customers with prepayment meters can get the help and support they need as well as access to low cost energy tariffs.
In most cases, an energy suppliers’ prepayment tariff will be their most basic option. Few come with any frills and, in most cases, offer an expensive alternative to standard variable and fixed rate deals. As E Energy specialises in prepayment deals, it’s able to focus on this often-overlooked area to provide its customers with a more rounded service.
Unlike many other energy suppliers, E Energy offers prepayment customers extras like loyalty rewards, friendly credit and smart meters. This can make the company a very attractive option for households looking for a better service from their prepayment provider.

If you pay for your gas and electricity in advance, choosing a company that specialises in prepayment deals can help you to get a good deal and enjoy a better level of targeted customer service. You’ll find lots of advice on getting the most from your prepayment meter on the company’s website and its customer service operatives are specially trained to deal with people paying for gas and electricity in advance.

As well as focusing on prepayment tariffs, E Energy also claims to offer a simplified, straightforward approach to gas and electricity. This can make it easier to understand your bills and stay on top of your energy payments.

Who owns E Energy?

E Energy is owned by Paul Cooke, a former co-owner of Economy Energy. Economy Energy ceased trading in 2019. Since it was first launched back in 2014, E Energy has slowly grown and today has around 300,000 customers across England, Wales and Scotland.

E Energy: what other services do they offer?

E Energy is a gas and electricity supplier that specialises in serving domestic customers. It doesn’t currently offer other services like boiler cover, home cover or extra utilities.
